Reach Out to High School Students
What is Talent Quest?
Talent Quest is a Brown program designed to assist students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in the college selection and application process. Talent Quest's main goals are:
- To enable Brown to build and maintain an ongoing relationship with a selected group of high schools and community-based organizations around the country
- To reach out to talented students in grades 9-12 at selected schools and community-based organizations that provide college access support services
Who is Talent Quest?
Alumni volunteers serve as mentors from Brown, establishing relationships with the selected high schools and community-based organizations on a local level. View descriptions of Talent Quest volunteer roles.
Why do we need this program?
Often talented students from lower socio-economic backgrounds are not provided the assistance with the college selection and application process that they deserve. Talent Quest is an opportunity for Brown alumni to expose high school students and their families from all backgrounds to the benefits of higher education. Through personal contacts, Talent Quest will:
- Connect alumni mentors with high school students to share their personal college selection process and educational experiences at Brown
- Articulate the benefits of Brown's unique curriculum
- Provide students with a chance to speak to current undergraduates about campus life and Brown's social, cultural, and educational opportunities
- Facilitate meetings with faculty members, where possible, to give high school students a sense of academic life at Brown
Ideally, students in grades 9-12 who initially would not have realized that they were potential candidates to apply to Brown or other esteemed institutions of higher education will have expanded their lists and increased their educational opportunities.
