as of 9/22/11

For Exceptional Service and Contribution to Society:

William Rogers Award
The highest honor bestowed upon a Brown graduate who exemplifies the University's mission to prepare alumni for lives of “usefulness and reputation”

  • 2011 Recipient:
  • Malika Saada Saar ’92
Malika Saada Saar is a nationally recognized advocate for the rights of women, girls and vulnerable families. Her legacy of public service includes founding Family Rights and Dignity, a civil rights project for low income and homeless families in California, and Crossing the River, a written and spoken word workshop for mothers in recovery from substance abuse and violence. In 2001, she founded the Rebecca Project for Human Rights, a policy and advocacy organization addressing the violence, exploitation and poverty affecting women and girls. The Rebecca Project recently succeeded in persuading the federal government and several states to ban the practice of shackling female inmates during childbirth. The organization also advocates for family drug rehab programs, in which mothers bring their children with them to rehab, as a more effective and lower-cost alternative to incarceration of addicted mothers and foster care for their children. Saada Saar’s work has been recognized by the Washington Post, the BBC, the Huffington Post and National Public Radio.

John Hope Award for Public Service
For an alumna or alumnus who has made a significant impact in his/her community or society, and who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to public service either as a professional or a volunteer

  • 2011 Recipient:
  • Daniel P. Corley ’75
Dan Corley is a school reform advocate and the founder of Community Preparatory School in Providence. Using innovative teaching techniques, the school has grown from a small, neighborhood inner-city institution to a national model in urban education. Today, ninety-two percent of the school’s graduates have been accepted into college preparatory high school programs, and eighty-two percent—more than twice the urban public-school average—are attending college. Corley and Community Prep’s distinctive approach to education—featuring rigorous academics, a teaching style that instills values and self-esteem, community service and family support—have earned recognition from the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal and other publications.
