The BAA’s 2011 Alumni Recognition Ceremony honored twenty-three individual alumni, one Brown Club and one Brown class for their outstanding contributions to Brown and to the wider world. We’d like to introduce you to a few of the winners:
William Rogers Award

Malika Saada Saar ’92
Malika Saada Saar, founder of the Rebecca Project for Human Rights, is a nationally recognized advocate for the rights of women, girls and vulnerable families.

Brown Bear Awards
Honors a lifetime of outstanding and wide-ranging volunteer service to Brown [ More about this award ]
2011 Recipients:
Bernard E. Bell ’42, P’71 ’72 ’78
For nearly seventy years, Bernie Bell has worked tirelessly to keep his classmates engaged in the Brown community. Bernie's many volunteer efforts include eleven years as president of the alumni class of 1942, nine years as treasurer, and two turns as chair of his class reunion gift committee. Eileen M. Rudden ’72, P’03 ’07 ’11
Past president of the Brown Alumni Association and member of the Brown Corporation, Eileen Rudden has been an innovator and a trailblazer for Brown, serving in dozens of roles with her class, the Pembroke Center, and fundraising for Brown. [ More about this recipient ]
William H. Twaddell ’63
Bill Twaddell has served the University in many capacities, most recently as chair of the Corporation’s efforts to enhance Brown’s relationship with the city of Providence and state of Rhode Island. [ More about this recipient ]
H. Anthony Ittleson ’60 Award
Given by the Brown Annual Fund to a volunteer or group of volunteers for extraordinary leadership

Michael P. Esposito ’86, James T. Janover ’86, P’15, Irene W. Bruynes Ponce ’86, Ralph F. Rosenberg ’86
Ralph, Irene, Jim, and Mike have emerged as leaders in a class that is widely recognized as one of Brown’s strongest. Last year, in honor of their 25th reunion, they helped raise the largest Annual Fund gift ever given to Brown by any class in the University’s history. [ More about these recipients ]
John Hope Award for Public Service
For an alumna or alumnus who has made a significant impact in his/her community or society, and who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to public service [ More about this award ]
2011 Recipient:
Daniel P. Corley ’75
Dan Corley is a school reform advocate and the founder of Community Preparatory School in Providence. Using innovative teaching techniques, the school has grown from a small, neighborhood inner-city institution to a national model in urban education.

The Joseph M. Fernandez ’85 Award
Honors an individual who has worked to bring diverse alumni together to make a positive contribution to the University community [ More about this award ]

Preston Tisdale ’73, P ’10, ’10 ’14 MD, ’12
Preston has served the Brown community for many decades through his work with the Inman Page Black Alumni Council, his class, his local Brown Club, and numerous advisory committees.
