Interview and Reach Out

BASC Program Roles and Responsibilites

In addition to the positions listed, BASC also appoints Area Coordinators in some major metropolitan areas to organize the BASC efforts for the area and manage the local Area Chairs. Some areas also have Event Coordinators and College Fair Coordinators as needed.

Worldwide Chair

The BASC Worldwide Chair is the highest level volunteer within the BASC program and the Chair of the BASC Executive Committee. He or she serves a three year term and is ultimately responsible for the success of the BASC program. The Worldwide Chair works with the staff BASC Director to provide leadership, guidance, and support to the BASC Executive Committee and all of the 6,000+ alumni who give their time to Brown as BASC volunteers.

The Worldwide Chair is appointed through an extensive review process by Alumni Relations staff and the outgoing Worldwide Chair. Most Worldwide Chairs have served as long-time interviewers, and have had experience as Area Chairs in highly populated BASC areas and/or as Regional Directors. The Worldwide Chair also sits on the Brown Alumni Association Board of Governors for his or her entire three-year term.

Regional Directors

There are 15 BASC Regions around the world; each region is further split up into BASC Areas. Regional Directors serve a three-year term, overseeing the BASC operations within a specific geographic region and providing guidance and leadership to the Area Chairs in their region.

The Regional Directors have four major responsibilities:

  1. to recruit and motivate effective BASC leadership within their regions,
  2. to support Area Chairs in the execution of their responsibilities,
  3. to guide BASC’s overall direction by serving on the BASC Executive Committee, and
  4. to act as a liaison between Area Chairs and the Executive Committee.

Effective Regional Directors are in close and frequent contact with their Area Chairs, are actively involved in the workings of the BASC Executive Committee, and have great enthusiasm for Brown!

Regional Directors are nominated by the outgoing Regional Director, and are ultimately selected by the Worldwide Chair and staff BASC Director.

Area Chair

Area Chairs serve a three-year term, organizing alumni volunteers to interview applicants and recruit new students for Brown in a given geographic area. Major duties include managing, motivating, recruiting, and assigning a committee of volunteers to conduct applicant interviews and attend college fairs and local Brown Club/BASC events.

The Area Chair is also encouraged to get involved with the local Brown Club (if one exists) and to work with any alumni affinity groups that may be in the area. The Area Chairs should maintain relationships with the area Admission Officer and local high schools.

Area Chairs usually have prior experience as enthusiastic BASC interviewers. They are are generally selected by the outgoing Area Chair and their Regional Director.
