What is ACAP

Alumni College Advising Program (ACAP): What do we offer

ACAP is an independent college advising service for the children of Brown alumni.  This service is offered free of charge by the Brown Alumni Relations department, and is aimed at helping families understand and navigate today's college admission landscape.  Experienced counselors, both veteran admission officers, work with students on identifying colleges that match their needs and qualifications, discuss the actual application process and what makes a strong application, and consult with them as they make their final choices. Our work with students might include any of the following:

  • Setting the context: admission landscape overview
  • Review of student's academic interests and record
  • Review of tests and testing plan
  • Review of extracurricular interests and activities
  • Discussion of colleges/college list development
  • Discussion of application process*
  • Post-decision follow up

*ACAP counselors do not offer essay review and editing. However, we are happy to offer insight into how various choices such as topic and voice are likely to come across to admission readers.

Our approach is simple: understand the admission landscape, be true to yourself and thoughtful about your choices, and know that there are many schools out there that will be a great fit for you. Please note: ACAP is not an advocacy program and students do not have to have an interest in Brown to work with us. In fact, a third of the alumni children with whom we work are not interested in applying to Brown.

Our program offers up to 2 1/2 hours of counseling time per student, which typically includes an initial meeting here on campus. If you are unable to make it to campus, we'd be happy to work with you over the phone or by e-mail. We begin meeting with students after January 1 of their junior year of high school. We are also available for quick phone or e-mail consultation prior to that time.

How to get started

Prior to our first meeting, we will require some background information so that we can get to know your son or daughter. Below you will find a list of documents that can be e-mailed, faxed, or mailed to the ACAP office. We look forward to working with you!
