Lunar New Year Celebrations in Style

New York City, Northern California, Southern California and Seattle

By Cynthia M. Reed '91

For the past several years, A4 has joined with local Brown clubs in various cities to co-host annual celebrations of lunar new year. This year, the Year of the Rat, A4 Board members past and present organized events in Boston, New York City, San Francisco, San Gabriel and Seattle. These events were held in Chinese restaurants with elaborate multi-course feasts and at hip lounges and clubs where good food and drinks could be shared by all.   The Boston and New York celebrations were the largest, with each attracting over 40 people.  The Boston event, hosted by A4 President Eugene Mahr '77 also included A4 Board member Andrew Shen '99 MAT '00 and many others.  Great prizes, conversation and impressive amounts of food were featured.   The chic NYC event was held at Apple lounge and was largely made possible thanks to support from the Brown Club of New York (BCNY). Special thanks go out to BCNY Board members Mike Tang '05 and David Hsia '94 who served as coordinators for the event that attracted about 50 people, including A4 Board members Stephen Chen '04 and Terrence Gong '07.   Those of us in Southern California, including Gloria Jan '87, Smith Surasmith '95, NaRhee Ahn '93, Anthony Cheng '95, Marcos Gonzalez '89 and Mary Rose '75, enjoyed a huge feast in San Gabriel (considered by many to be Los Angeles's true chinatown) and later celebrated NaRhee's birthday with karaoke in koreatown well into the early morning.   The intimate Seattle celebration featured excellent food and conversation hosted by A4 Board member Eric De Los Santos '90. And A4 Board member George Kong '02 organized dinner and drinks at a hip San Francisco lounge where over two dozen alums, including Dick Barker '57 and many from the class of 2005, packed a small private dining room to feast on salt and spice crabs and other fine dishes.
To everyone who attended these events and/or helped to organize them, thank you! Your energy and excellent company helped to usher in what we all hope will be a spectacular and productive year of the Rat!  For all who were not able to attend this year, we urge you to participate next year. And to whet your appetite until then, we attach some pictures from this year's events. Enjoy!
