Brown A4 Board and Officers

STEPHEN CHEN '04 is on the executive board for the Asian Mentorship Program (AMP), an organization dedicated to connecting young professionals with senior industry leaders. As an undergraduate, Stephen was active with the Swearer Center for Public Service where he
coordinated the SouthEast Asian Mentoring (SEAM) program and served on the executive team for the Entrepreneurship Program.

ERIC C. DE LOS SANTOS ’90 is a Senior Corporate Counsel for Labor Ready, Inc., headquartered in Tacoma, Washington. In addition to providing counsel and advice on various matters, Eric coordinates lobbying efforts on behalf of the company in several of its larger markets including New York, Massachusetts, California, and Florida. He is currently serving his third year on the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors. At Brown, he was President and Coordinator of Campus Life of the Undergraduate Council of Students, a MPC, and an active member of AASA. He graduated from Brown with a degree in Public Policy and American Institutions and received his JD from the University of Washington. For several years, Eric was a writer and founding member of the Pork Filled Players, a multi-ethnic sketch comedy group and artists-in-residence at the Northwest Asian American Theatre. He was born and raised in Honolulu, and lives with his partner Chad Hartley in Seattle.

TERRENCE GONG ’07 is a Financial Analyst at Time Inc., where he works for the This Old House division. In addition to volunteering with Brown A4, Terrence is also the co-founder and co-facilitator of  DowneTime: The GAPIMNY Young Adult Group, a monthly safe space confidential support and discussion group for queer Asian men/ transgender people ages 18-26 in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. He is also a member of the Time Inc. Asian American Association. At Brown, Terrence received a B.A. in Economics and Education Studies. As an undergraduate, he was the President of the Asian American Students Association (AASA), a RC, and the Asian/Asian American Student Services Programmer. He also co-founded the QA Queer Community Committee (QCC), and co-founded a group for queer Asian/ Asian American students called Pan-Asian Queers (PAQ). Terrence currently resides in New York City.

GEORGE KONG ’02 received an AB in International Relations ('02), an ScB and a MS in Computer Science ('03) at Brown.  After Brown, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work as a software engineer in Network Appliance, where he is still currently employed.  When he was at Brown, George was a member of CSA, AASA and served as the Vice President of the Brown United Nations Club.  He also served as a MPC, a TWC staffer, and a Community Director.  George is a Brown interviewer and a Brown ACCESS mentor, and a member of the Chinese Software Professional's Association.  When not working, George likes to play basketball, scuba dive in the freezing Bay water, and travel.

Maxine Lee ’88 (President-elect) obtained an AB in both Asian American studies (independent concentration) and chemistry.  At Brown, Maxine was an Admissions Coordinator for AASA, student liaison to the 1986 Blue Ribbon Committee on minority life and education, Vice Chair of the Committee on Admissions & Financial Aid, and a member of the Campus Minority Affairs Committee.  Maxine obtained her JD from SUNY at Buffalo Law School in 1993, where she served as President of the Asian American Law Students Association and Publications Editor on the Buffalo Law Review.  She began her legal career in the field of commercial litigation and served on the Board of Directors of the Rochester Chinese Association and as Founding President of the Rochester Asian American Bar Association.  Since 1995, Maxine has concentrated in the field of immigration law, and has worked for a large general practice law firm, in-house for an information technology consulting company, and with a small boutique immigration firm.  In late 2005, Maxine opened her own law firm and currently advises corporations and individuals on their immigration concerns.  She is a BASC interviewer, as well as a member of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey and the Asian American Bar Association of New York.  Maxine lives in Edison, NJ with her husband and two daughters. 

Woo Lee ’91 graduated with an A.B. in history and political science from Brown in 1991, and is currently an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission's Division of Financial Practices in Washington, D.C.  At the Federal Trade Commission, Woo is responsible for investigating and prosecuting unlawful, fraudulent and deceptive trade practices in the United States financial markets.  While at Brown, Woo was active in the TWC as a Minority Peer Counselor (1992-1993) and AASA secretary (1991-1992).  Woo received a degree in jurisprudence from Oxford University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2001.  Woo and his family currently live in Columbia, Maryland, where he is active with the Washington, D.C.-area BASC, and serves as Vice President for Programs of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association for the District of Columbia.  Prior to joining the FTC, Woo was a litigator with the Washington D.C. law firm of Goodwin Procter LLP/Shea & Gardner, and served as a law clerk for Judge Dorothy W. Nelson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and Judge James Ware of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

MYRA LIWANAG ‘91 (Secretary) is a consultant specializing in organization development and human resources management with Community Resource Exchange, a not-for-profit organization that provides management assistance to community-based not-for-profit organizations serving the poor and disenfranchised in New York City.  While at Brown, Myra was deeply engaged in the Third World Community, including involvement as an MPC, TWTP coordinator, AASA spokesperson, and founding president of the Filipino Alliance.  Myra graduated in 1991 with an AB in American Civilization, specializing in Asian American Studies.  Before transitioning into the non-profit sector, Myra worked in the corporate sector for over twelve years in human resources and management consulting roles.  She has a Master’s degree in organizational psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University.  Myra currently serves as board chair for the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, an advocacy group in New York City, where she has been a board member since 2001 and recently served as Interim Executive Director.  Originally from Massachusetts, Myra lives in Harrison, NY with her husband Paul Castro.  Having been involved in A4’s early start-up phase, Myra is excited to be returning to A4 and serving on the board.

EUGENE MAHR '77 (President) received an ScB in Biology from Brown, and got his first job in the Admission Office, where he was Associate Director until 1985.  He left that office to get an MBA at Yale, and then worked in international marketing operations for over a decade, including a three-year posting in Hong Kong for Polaroid.  After slipping on the banana peel of an internet company, he returned to higher education a few years ago and is now a Senior Officer for the Corporate Partnerships Office at Northeastern.  Eugene was a member of AASA in its early years, and was Vice President his junior year.  A native Cantonese speaker born and raised in NY, he taught English in downtown Providence at the Chinese community center while a student.  He is a long-time BASC volunteer, Brown Club of Boston President and founding board member of A4.  Brown is near and dear to his heart, due to the many friends he has made there over the years.  His positive feelings are further reinforced by his wife Jody, also Class of '77, and his sons Christopher '07 and Daniel '11.

Tanya Rakpraja '00 graduated with a BA in Public Policy. At Brown, she was a Minority Peer Counselor, BOLT leader, and co-chaired the 1999 East Coast Asian Student Union Conference. Since graduating, Tanya has worked on poverty alleviation strategies both domestically and abroad. Domestically, she has worked on welfare reauthorization and child care subsidy policies in D.C., led trips with inner city youth through Outward Bound, and managed an assisted living facility in FL. Internationally, Tanya has evaluated rural income generation projects in Thailand, worked on microfinance in Peru, and researched the impacts of urbanization in China. She is currently a Trader/Analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Tanya recently graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs with a dual masters in International Development and Urban and Regional Planning.

CYNTHIA REED '91 is a Staff Attorney with Public Counsel, a Los Angeles-based non-profit legal organization.  Cynthia works in the Consumer Law Project where she litigates cases involving foreclosure rescue scams, home equity fraud and other forms of consumer abuses.  Prior to joining Public Counsel this year, Cynthia was a litigation associate at large law firms in New York and California for 8 years, after completing a 2 year federal appellate clerkship in New York.  Cynthia graduated from Brown in 1991 with a political science major.  Brown politicized her at every level.  After the unique bonding experience of TWTP, Cynthia served as a MPC her sophomore year, lived in the then-notorious "power house" with a diverse group of female activists her junior year, ran Third World Women as Friends for the Women's Center and was historian for the Third World Center, during her senior year.  Prior to attending UCLA law school in 1994, Cynthia worked for two legal organizations in NYC representing poor, HIV positive people.  While in the private sector, Cynthia enjoyed opportunities to work on a wide range of pro bono and public interest matters, including death penalty defense, international human rights and constitutional issues post 9/11.  An Army brat who grew up in different places, but predominantly in Northern Virginia, Cynthia claims NYC and LA as home and currently resides in LA.  Cynthia is very excited to represent Southern California on the A4 Board, and is used to bridging gaps of space and community, in part due to her mixed heritage (korean mother, black father).

ANDREW SHEN '99 MAT '00 graduated from Brown with a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies and History, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT).  During his time at Brown, Andrew was also involved with the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, where he was the program coordinator for its summer Research Apprenticeship Program.  After Brown, Andrew taught at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, MA from 2000 to 2004.  In 2005, Andrew became the founding Director of Northeastern University's Asian American Center, and also served for a time as the Associate Dean for Academic and Cultural Enrichment Services.  In the Fall of 2007, Andrew will be returning to full-time student status, as a graduate student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, in their School Leadership program.  Along with A4, Andrew is also a BASC area coordinator for the MetroWest Boston region.  A lifelong nati ve of Massachusetts, Andrew currently lives in Sudbury, MA with his wife Melisa and two small children - Hayden and Addison, where they all wear Red Sox gear and feed the monster that is Red Sox nation. 

Timothy Wang '05 graduated from Brown with an AB in International Relations with a focus on Political Economy of Development.  While at Brown, Tim was a member of the Brown Men's Swimming team and captain during his Junior and Senior year.  Tim was also a member of the Brown Student Athletic Advisory Committee and represented Brown at the IVY League SAAC meetings.  Tim was also the Brown Bear Mascot for all four years!  Outside of the Brown Community, Tim has worked at the Committee of 100, which is a national non-partisan organization composed of American citizens of Chinese descent that look to serve as a bridge between Greater China and America.  Since June of 2005, Tim has been working at Capital IQ, as a Client Development Associate in New York.  Tim is a new member and is excited to participate and contribute to A4 and the greater Brown community.
