The A4 Board is comprised of 13 Governors: 4 Officers and 9 Board Members. Officers are elected by the general membership, and Board Members are appointed by the Officers. These alumni volunteers collectively represent a broad spectrum of classes, geographies and ethnicities, all dedicated to furthering A4's mission for serving fellow Asian and Asian American Brunonians.

Board Member Profiles

ANTHONY CHENG ’95 is a principal and founder of Anthem Development, LLC an infill real estate firm specializing in commercial and mixed-use development, affordable housing, and redevelopment projects with a focus on green construction. Previously, Anthony was the President and co-founder of renren Media Limited, an Internet community website company based in Hong Kong targeting global Chinese users.  There he took the venture from just an idea through several rounds of venture funding and on to becoming a publicly traded company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, ultimately selling the business in 2001.  Anthony began his career after Brown as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company in New York and Shanghai serving mostly healthcare clients and financial institutions.  Concentrating in both Biochemistry and Economics at Brown, he was President of the Chinese Students Association, organized a multitude of joint events between various Asian campus clubs, and played with the Brown Jazz Band.  He currently serves on the Boards for the Brown Alumni Association and Brown Club of So Cal, and was a former BASC Area Chair.  When not fretting about the real estate market, Anthony enjoys traveling, drum corps, wine tasting, and volunteering in his community in LA.

ERIC C. DE LOS SANTOS ’89 (Secretary) is a Senior Corporate Counsel for Labor Ready, Inc., headquartered in Tacoma, Washington. In addition to providing counsel and advice on various matters, Eric coordinates lobbying efforts on behalf of the company in several of its larger markets across the country. He is active in various state and local bar associations and is currently President-Elect of the Filipino Lawyers of Washington Bar Association. At Brown, he was President and Coordinator of Campus Life of the Undergraduate Council of Students, an MPC, and an active member of AASA. He graduated from Brown with a degree in Public Policy and American Institutions and received his JD from the University of Washington. For several years, Eric was a writer and founding member of the Pork Filled Players, a multi-ethnic sketch comedy group and artists-in-residence at the Northwest Asian American Theatre. He was born and raised in Honolulu, and lives with his partner Chad in Seattle.

GEORGE KONG ’02 received an AB in International Relations ('02), an ScB and a MS in Computer Science ('03) at Brown.  After Brown, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work as a software engineer in Network Appliance, where he is still currently employed.  When he was at Brown, George was a member of CSA, AASA and served as the Vice President of the Brown United Nations Club.  He also served as an MPC, a TWC staffer, and a Community Director.  George is a BASC interviewer, Brown ACCESS mentor, and a member of the Chinese Software Professional's Association.  When not working, George likes to play basketball, scuba dive in the freezing Bay water, and travel.

KAVITA KUMAR ’00 is the higher education reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. While at Brown, she was an MPC, coordinator of Women's History Month, and the spokesperson for AASA. She was also a news editor for the College Hill Independent. She graduated with a BA in American Civilization, with a focus in ethnic studies. After Brown, she worked for a couple of years as a reporter for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis and then went to Columbia University to get her master's degree in journalism. An Ohio native, she has been in St. Louis now for about 4 years. Currently, she writes stories, blogs, and tweets about issues in higher education. When she's not on deadline, she enjoys sushi, yoga, NPR, indie rock, kickball and traveling.

JUHYUNG HAROLD LEE '06 graduated from Brown in 2006 with an AB in Ethnic Studies. While at Brown, Harold was actively involved with the Third World and Asian American communities as a AASA member, MPC Friend, TWC Staffer, contributor to and editor of VISIONS, and a co-programmer of Asian/Asian American History Month in 2003 and 2005. During his senior year, he worked in collaboration with other Asian American students to document and preserve Asian/Asian American history at Brown; develop a website to present the compiled research materials ; and create a social/study space and library of important Asian American texts and films on the third floor of the TWC. After doing civic participation work in Los Angeles Koreatown, Harold returned to the East Coast to receive his M.A. in Elementary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He currently teaches fifth grade in a predominantly Chinese community in Queens, NY and is excited about working to support Asian and Asian American students at Brown.

MAXINE LEE ’88 (President-Elect) obtained an AB in both Asian American Studies (independent concentration) and Chemistry.At Brown, Maxine was an Admissions Coordinator for AASA, student liaison to the 1986 Blue Ribbon Committee on minority life and education, Vice Chair of the Committee on Admissions & Financial Aid, and a member of the Campus Minority Affairs Committee.Maxine obtained her JD from SUNY at Buffalo Law School in 1993, where she served as President of the Asian American Law Students Association and Publications Editor on the Buffalo Law Review.She began her legal career in the field of commercial litigation and served on the Board of Directors of the Rochester Chinese Association and as Founding President of the Rochester Asian American Bar Association.Since 1995, Maxine has concentrated in the field of immigration law, and has worked for a large general practice law firm, in-house for an information technology consulting company, and with a small boutique immigration firm.In late 2005, Maxine opened her own law firm and currently advises corporations and individuals on their immigration concerns.She is a BASC interviewer, as well as a member of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey and the Asian American Bar Association of New York.Maxine lives in Edison, NJ with her two daughters.

EUGENE MAHR ’77 (President) received an ScB in Biology from Brown, and got his first job in the Admission Office, where he was Associate Director until 1985. He left that office to get an MBA at Yale, and then worked in international marketing operations for over a decade, including a three-year posting in Hong Kong for Polaroid. After slipping on the banana peel of an Internet company, he returned to higher education a few years ago and is now a Senior Officer for the Corporate Partnerships Office at Northeastern University. Eugene was a member of AASA in its early years, and was Vice President his junior year. A native Cantonese speaker born and raised in NY, he taught English in downtown Providence at the Chinese community center while a student. He is a long-time BASC volunteer, President of the Brown Club of Boston and a founding board member of A4. Brown is near and dear to his heart, due to the many friends he has made there over the years. His positive feelings are further reinforced by his wife Jody, also Class of ’77, and his sons Christopher ’07 and Daniel ’11.

TANYA RAKPRAJA ’00 graduated with a BA in Public Policy. At Brown, she was a Minority Peer Counselor, BOLT leader, and co-chaired the 1999 East Coast Asian Student Union Conference. Since graduating, Tanya has worked on poverty alleviation strategies both domestically and abroad. Domestically, she has worked on welfare reauthorization and child care subsidy policies in DC, led trips with inner city youth through Outward Bound, and managed an assisted living facility in FL. Internationally, Tanya has evaluated rural income generation projects in Thailand, worked on microfinance in Peru, and researched the impacts of urbanization in China. She is currently a Trader/Analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Tanya recently graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs with a dual masters in International Development and Urban and Regional Planning.

CYNTHIA REED ’91 is an Attorney with The Hernandez Law Group, a small business litigation firm based in Pasadena.  After graduating from UCLA School of Law in 1997, Cynthia enjoyed a 2-year clerkship with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals; was a litigation associate for 8 years at several large law firms in NYC, SF and LA; and then spent 1.3 years at a non-profit legal organization.  Cynthia graduated from Brown with a political science major; Brown politicized her in many, lasting ways.  After the unique bonding experience of TWTP, Cynthia served as a MPC her sophomore year; lived in the then-notorious "power house" with a diverse group of female activists her junior year; ran Third World Women as Friends for the Women's Center; and was historian for the Third World Center during her senior year.  Before law school and throughout her career, Cynthia has pursued public interest projects on behalf of poor people, consumers, the elderly, a Texas death row inmate and non-profit organizations.  An Army brat who grew up in different places, Cynthia claims LA and NYC as home and currently resides in LA.  Cynthia is excited to be one of two board members representing Southern California, and is used to bridging gaps of space and community, in part due to her mixed heritage (Korean mother, black father).

SACHIN SHAH ’05 received his ScB in Neuroscience and is currently a student at Yale University School of Medicine. While at Brown, Sachin was a member of the South Asian Student Association and in his senior year served on the SASA executive board. In addition, he worked with a number of Swearer Center programs, teaching at HARI Sunday school and directing Providence Allied CPR Education, a health education program. After Brown, Sachin taught high school science at the Hewitt School in New York City for a year before entering the MD program. While in medical school, Sachin has maintained his community engagement through various organizations; currently, he is a board member of Shape Up RI and former chair of an annual philanthropic auction in New Haven. Recently, Sachin was also actively involved with the Obama Campaign for Change, working in Cleveland as a part of the field program and assisting as a memberof the health care policy committee.

ANDREW SHEN 99 MAT 00 (Treasurer) graduated from Brown with a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies and History, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). During his time at Brown, Andrew was also involved with the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, where he was the program coordinator for its summer Research Apprenticeship Program. After Brown, Andrew taught at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, MA from 2000 to 2004. In 2005, Andrew became the founding Director of Northeastern University's Asian American Center, and also served for a time as the Associate Dean for Academic and Cultural Enrichment Services. In 2007, Andrew attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and earned a Masters in School Leadership. He is now an administrator in the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District. Along with A4, Andrew is also a BASC Area Coordinator for the MetroWest Boston region. A lifelong native of Massachusetts, Andrew currently lives in Sudbury, MA with his wife Melisa and three small children - Hayden, Addison, and Parker, where they all wear Red Sox gear and feed the monster that is Red Sox nation.

TIMOTHY WANG 05 graduated from Brown with an AB in International Relations with a focus on Political Economy of Development. While at Brown, Tim was a member of the Brown Men's Swimming team and captain during his Junior and Senior year. Tim was also a member of the Brown Student Athletic Advisory Committee and represented Brown at the Ivy League SAAC meetings. Tim was also the Brown Bear Mascot for all four years! Outside of the Brown Community, Tim has worked at the Committee of 100, which is a national non-partisan organization composed of American citizens of Chinese descent that look to serve as a bridge between Greater China and America. Since June 2005, Tim has been working at Capital IQ, as a Client Development Associate in New York. As of January 2009, he became a Director in Hong Kong charged with opening the Asia office. Tim is in his second year and is excited to participate and contribute to A4 as well as the greater Brown community.
