The Plan for Academic Enrichment

 Simmons Charts Course in Difficult Economic Climate
Due to the current economic crisis, the University will delay some planned growth, but sustain its commitments to financial aid and current faculty. President Simmons, who also recently attended the World Economic Forum, outlined measures Brown will take in a recent letter.

 Undergraduate Applications Rise 21% to Highest Number in History
The College received nearly 25,000 applications for admission to the class of 2013, with the number rising across regions, socioeconomic groups, and academic backgrounds.


 Inauguration Evokes Celebration
and Reflection

Live broadcasts and faculty panels brought students and faculty together to discuss the challenges that the nation’s 44th president will face. President Simmons recorded her views on the historic inauguration for the Wall Street Journal.


 University’s Tuition Leniency Aids Hundreds of Students
This semester, approximately 360 students are benefiting from a temporary policy allowing students with outstanding tuition balances to register for classes and remain in student housing.

Ph.D student Sopie Lebrecht and cognitive neuroscientist Michael Tarr have found that teaching people to better differentiate the facial features of individuals of various races can help reduce racial bias.

 Gymnastics Team Returns with Season’s Best Score
After two back-to-back meets on the road, the gymnastics team returned to Brown with a season-best score of 187.300 and a first-place standing in the Ivy League. The team went on to raise its season high to 189.575 against Bridgeport.
 Women’s Ice Hockey Wins in Overtime Upset Against Princeton Tigers
Nicole Stock ’09 and Jenna Dancewicz ’11 led the Bears to their second win in a row, moving the team up a place in the rankings and a step closer to the playoffs.
 Men’s Tennis Takes Victory, Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer
The men’s tennis team won 6-1 against Marist College while wearing pink arm bands to show support for Brown’s Second Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Kendrick Au ’11, of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helped organize and host the event.
