The Plan for Academic Enrichment

Brown and RISD Joint-Degree Program Takes Shape
Beginning in 2008, a five-year dual degree program will award students a bachelor of arts or science from Brown and a bachelor of fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Renovation of Faunce House Will Create Campus Center
Gifts totaling $15 million will support renovating Faunce House to create the new Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center in an effort to foster a stronger sense of community among students. See the news release.
William R. Rhodes Rhodes Gift Establishes Center for International Economics
A $10 million gift from trustee emeritus William R. Rhodes '57 will fund a new professorship and Center for International Economics to expand the University's teaching and research in international trade and finance. See the news release.
Health Services Research Doctorate Approved by Faculty
A new doctoral program in health services research would expand the Department of Community Health and bring the University closer to establishing a full-fledged school of public health. The program must be approved by the Corporation before it can admit candidates.
Seniors Continue Tradition of Giving Back
Members of the Class of 2007 gathered in Sayles Hall to kick off their Senior Class Gift fundraising effort. A surprise announcement from President Simmons positioned them for record-setting results.

Brown Responds to Slavery and Justice Report, Will Raise Money for Public Schools
Inspired by the report of its Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, Brown will raise $10 million for an endowment to help public schools in Providence and will waive tuition for up to 10 Urban Education Fellows per year. Task Force Will Review Brown Curriculum
A new committee that includes students will review four major aspects of the Brown undergraduate curriculum: general education, teaching and assessment, concentrations, and advising programs. The Task Force on Undergraduate Education will present its recommendations in the spring of 2008. See BDH article.
Thomas Tisch Corporation Elects New Chancellor, Vice Chancellor; Approves Budget, Tuition
The Corporation elected Thomas Tisch '76 as Brown's 20th chancellor and Jerome Vascellaro '74 as vice chancellor. An approved budget increase will sustain momentum for the Plan for Academic Enrichment, increase financial aid for international students, and more. See BDH articles: Chancellor, Budget

Well over 100 alumni have come to campus this semester to talk with students about their life experiences. Career Week showcased the widest variety of professional fields, while the entrepreneurship and social justice events provided deeper exposure to specific areas.

Brown neuroscientists explain why opioids are powerful weapons against pain - a finding that may aid in the development of safer pain relievers.   Migration Played Key Role in HIV Spread in South Africa

Senior linebacker Zak DeOssie is the first Brown undergraduate to be invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, a weeklong regimen of workouts, physicals, aptitude tests, and interviews with the top 300 or so college players eligible for the April draft.
Mark McAndrew Men's Basketball Scares Quakers, Handles Tigers; Co-captain Hits His Stride
After winning three of its last four games, the Bears defeated Princeton, then gave Ivy League champion UPenn all it could handle in a 67-64 loss. Co-captain Mark McAndrew '08, the Ivy League's leading scorer and first team All-Ivy, has taken his game to another level.
Levon Mock Three Wrestlers Named to All-Ivy Team; Two Head to NCAA Tournament
Junior co-captain Levon Mock earned Second Team All-Ivy honors, while senior co-captain Shawn Kitchner and Mark Savino '08 earned Honorable Mention. Kitchner and Mock finished fourth in their respective weight classes at the EIWA Championship and will conclude their seasons at the NCAA Tournament.
Digit Murphy Women's Icers Coach Records 300th Career Win
Women's ice hockey Head Coach Digit Murphy earned career victories No. 300 and 301 in league wins - 6-0 over Union College and a 4-1 victory over RPI. Hayley Moore '08 continued her exceptional play with two goals and four assists in the two games, extending her point streak to 14 games.
Alicia Sacramone Alicia Sacramone '10 Earns ECAC Gymnastics Rookie of the Week
After breaking Brown's vault and all-around school records, as well as setting a new Ivy Classic record in the all-around, freshman Alicia Sacramone was named the ECAC Gymnastics Rookie of the Week.
