Craig Mello '82 shares the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in the discovery of RNA interference - gene silencing by double-stranded RNA.

Social psychologist Jennifer Richeson '94 and playwright Sarah Ruhl '97, '01 MFA are recipients of MacArthur Foundation fellowships or so-called "genius" awards.

Dr. Aaron T. Beck '42, '82 Hon. receives a Lasker Award for his more than 40 years of pioneering work in the field of cognitive therapy.

Bruce Katz '81 receives the Heinz Award in Public Policy for his work toward reshaping and revitalizing cities and suburbs.

In one remarkable month, Brown alumni added a Nobel prize (Craig Mello '82) and two MacArthur awards (Jennifer Richeson '94, Sarah Ruhl '97, '01 MFA) to the growing list of Brunonian achievements; and the Brown Alumni Association bestowed its own awards for public service and volunteer efforts. The Plan for Academic Enrichment


Dedicated to Science
The Sidney E. Frank Hall for Life Sciences, the largest capital project in Brown's history, was dedicated on Oct. 6. The building's 62 offices, 30 laboratories, auditorium, and 10 conference rooms will be home to 39 professors of biology, medical science, and neuroscience.
Mastering Entrepreneurship
Brown has launched a new master's program for students interested in the business side of engineering, entrepreneurship, and technology startups.

Ruth Simmons President Simmons... Is Everywhere:
... is featured in a Newsweek story on women and leadership, participates in a forum titled "How to Cultivate the Next Generation of Women Leaders," and is interviewed on the Today show as an outstanding leader and role model.
... is on an expert panel on institutional bias faced by female scientists and engineers in academia convened by the National Academy of Sciences that included Maria Zuber '83 ScM, '86 Ph.D. The story was reported for the New York Times by Cornelia Dean '69.
... leads former President Bill Clinton and Microsoft founder Bill Gates in a panel discussion about social change at the Clinton Global Initiative.


Grant Will Help Advance Women's Careers in Science, Engineering
Brown will work to ensure productive careers and leadership opportunities for women scientists through a major grant awarded by the National Science Foundation. A total of $3.3 million over five years will go toward increasing the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers.

Brown Team Finds Earliest Known Writing in New World
The arrangement of symbols inscribed on a stone slab found in Mexico suggest that an ancient Olmec civilization was using written language roughly three centuries earlier than previously proposed. "We are dealing with the first clear evidence of writing in the New World," said Professor of Anthropology Stephen Houston. Media throughout the world have reported on the discovery.
Researchers Identify Link Between Alzheimer's and Diabetes
Research led by Professor of Pathology Suzanne de la Monte finds that Alzheimer's is associated with a lack of insulin in the brain. A variant of a drug used to treat diabetes restored memory in rats with a mild form of Alzheimer's disease and eliminated one of the hallmarks of the disease.
Nanotechnology Propels Advances in Regenerative Medicine Research
Associate Professor of Engineering Thomas Webster and collaborators at Yonsei University in Seoul have found that nanotubes help adult stem cells morph into neurons in brain-damaged rats, which could have important implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological disorders.

A pioneer in women's health, a leading scholar in French and African-American studies, and three heroic staff of the New Orleans Times-Picayune were among those honored at the Brown Alumni Association's recent Alumni Recognition Ceremony.

Kathryn Moos Moos '07 a Hit on Field and on Ice
Recently named Ivy League Player of the Week, Kathryn Moos '07 has led the women's soccer team to consecutive wins over Boston College and Sacred Heart University. A co-captain this season, Moos has also been a standout on the women's ice hockey team.
Andrea Posa Field Hockey's Posa '08 Has Bears in Position for Run at Ivy Crown
Andrea Posa '08 was named Ivy League Player of the Week following her three-goal outburst during wins over the University of Rhode Island and Harvard. She scored the game winner against the Crimson, and she leads the Ivies with 12 points.
Men's Water Polo Dominates in Recent Games
The Bears have stepped up recently to bring big defeats to M.I.T. and Connecticut College.
