Francisco Besosa '71 has been nominated to be a U.S. District Judge for the District of Puerto Rico.

Students in the News

Nearly 2,000 people participated in Shape Up RI, organized by Brown medical student Rajiv Kumar '05 MD'09* to address the obesity epidemic.

Several Brown students and alumni, including Angela Matsushita '09 and Kenny Morales '09, are part of a Bike and Build team riding cross-country to raise money for affordable housing.

Biomed and engineering students won a prize for developing a device that can diagnose anemia without a blood test.

The Plan for Academic Enrichment

Brown Annual Fund Surpasses $30 Million with Record-Setting Participation
Thanks to gifts from 32,295 alumni, parents, and friends, the Brown Annual Fund raised a record $30.7 million in 2005-2006, exceeding its goal by 14%. Read more.
Brown-Trinity Consortium Hits Its Stride
Trinity Repertory Company joined forces with Brown in 2002 to create a master's degree program for actors and directors. Four years later, the program's leaders and graduates have made the program among the most competitive, and collaborative, in the country.
Community Involvement Program Joins Annenberg
The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown will incorporate The Community Involvement Program (CIP) on September 1. Created in 1996 by the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University, CIP supports community-based action for school improvement in urban areas.
Brown, Oak Ridge Team Up for Materials Science Research
Brown and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have established a formal affiliation to support research and teaching with an emphasis in materials science. Oak Ridge is the U.S. Department of Energy's largest multipurpose science and energy laboratory, and home to the world's most powerful electron microscope.

Katherine Bergeron Katherine Bergeron Named Dean of the College
Katherine Bergeron, professor and chair of the music department, is the new dean of the College. Bergeron succeeds Paul Armstrong, who had served since October 2000.


$35 Million from Kauffmann Foundation Will Support Entrepreneurship on Campuses
Brown will receive funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation to encourage entrepreneurial education. The foundation invited selected schools to apply for the grants because of their "ability to create a culture of entrepreneurship that permeates the campus." See also Inc.com article on this topic.
President Simmons President Simmons Interviewed in China's People's Daily
President Ruth J. Simmons's wide-ranging Q&A with the People's Daily touches upon the cost of higher education, financial aid and endowment, the value of diversity, Brown programs focused on China and its culture, and how the "university college" and the Brown curriculum benefit students.
600 Miles to Victory: Brown Hosts Revolutionary War Reenactment and Symposium
A series of events organized by Brown and the Rhode Island Rochambeau Commission on the 225th anniversary of the historic march to Yorktown, VA commemorated the role the French played in the American Revolution. See also the Providence Journal* article on this topic. (* Free registration required).
Corporation Names Life Sciences Building, Establishes Professorships
The new Life Sciences Building will be named after Sidney E. Frank '42, one of Brown's honored benefactors. Also approved were four new professorships, the expansion of the Medical School student body, and divestment from companies conducting business in Sudan.

A team led by Brown researchers shows that a tiny brain sensor has allowed a quadriplegic man to open a prosthetic hand, control a robotic limb, and move a computer cursor - using his thoughts alone. Clinical trial results are featured on the cover of Nature. Media around the world have reported on the scientific breakthrough, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, BBC News, Agence France Presse, and Scientific American, to name only a few.
How Cooperation Can Evolve in a Cheater's World
Whether you're a free-loading virus or a meat-stealing monkey, selfishness pays. So how do cooperators survive in a cheater's world? Thomas Flatt, a postdoctoral research associate, is among researchers whose theoretical model can explain a dilemma that has stumped biologists and social scientists for decades.
Gordon Wood Focusing on the Founding Fathers
History Professor Gordon Wood discusses the Founding Fathers and the outcome of their efforts in U.S. News and World Report. A review of his recent book, Revolutionary Characters: What Made the Founders Different, says Wood "paints these fascinating characters in all their contrasting and conflicting colors, and does so quite brilliantly."
Science as a Sport*
The Brown RoboCup Club, coached by assistant professor of computer science Chad Jenkins, competes in robot soccer. Brown Corporation Elects Four Alumni, One Parent as Trustees
Brown alumni H. Anthony Ittleson '60, Debra L. Lee '76, Joan Wernig Sorensen '72, and Peter Stuart Voss '68, three of whom are also Brown parents, began six-year terms as Brown trustees on July 1. Also elected for the same term was Brown parent Charles M. Rosenthal P'88 P'91.

Asian/Asian American Alumni Alliance (A4) Elects New Leadership
A4's recent election yielded two new officers whose two-year terms began on July 1. Myra Liwanag '91, previously acting secretary, has been elected to a full term as secretary, while Stephen Chen '04 will serve as treasurer. Learn more about A4 on its Web site.

Nick Hartigan Nick Hartigan '06 Lands Free Agent Contract
The New York Jets have signed Brown's All-American running back Nick Hartigan '06 to a rookie free agent contract. Hartigan impressed the New York coaching staff at the Jets' May mini-camp, showing the hard-running ability that made him one of the most prolific rushers in Ivy League football history.
Anna Willard Senior Anna Willard Goes on Track and Field Record-Breaking Spree
Already the owner of four school records, Willard placed sixth in the NCAA championships 3000-meter steeplechase, giving her All-American status for the second time and setting new school and personal records. Next she won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2006 NACAC Under-23 Championships, breaking the meet record by 10 seconds.
Mike Goldberger All-Around Success for Brown Athletes*
