Cecile Richards '80 is the new president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

George W. Bush will nominate John A. Rizzo '69 to be General Counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Filmmaker Tanuj Chopra '99's Punching at the Sun won Best Narrative Feature at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

Attorney Robert G. Flanders Jr. '71 was nominated by Senator Lincoln Chafee to serve on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Juniors Mike Frederickson, John Harroff, and Joe Lace are the creators of CollegeCanvas.com, a Web-based business selling original art from students in the Providence area at affordable prices.

Michael P. Steinberg, professor of history and music and director of the Cogut Center for the Humanities, introduces the center on the Graduate School Web site.
2006 Proves the Toughest Year to Get Into Brown
A record 18,313 students applied to be admitted to the University's class of 2010. Brown accepted 13.8 percent, or 2,523, of the applicants - its lowest admit rate ever.
Growing Annual Fund Support for the Plan
The Brown Annual Fund, spurred by a $1.5 million Corporation Participation Challenge, is working to increase its number of individual donors by 8 percent over last year's total.

Ruth Simmons Speaks on ABC Radio and at Columbia
President Ruth Simmons recently appeared live on "Satellite Sisters," a nationally syndicated radio show. Simmons also gave a presidential lecture at Columbia on the value of diversity in building better democracies. Listen to the radio program and watch video of the speech online.
Students and Faculty Debate Grading System
The possible addition of pluses and minuses to Brown's grading system has sparked debate on topics including grade inflation, an on-campus obsession with A's, the curriculum, and graduate schools' perception of transcripts.

Brown Appoints First Muslim Chaplain

The Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life has appointed a Muslim chaplain, Rumee Ahmed, to its staff. Ahmed will support the spiritual life of the Muslim student community.
Marines Find Fertile Ground at Brown*

Microsoft, Brown Join to Research Pen-Based Computing
Brown University and Microsoft Research have launched a three-year research alliance, the first of its kind in the nation. The goal is to create pen-based computer software that will make it easier for scientists, artists and others who use handwriting and sketching to create and communicate. Dinosaur Locomotion: Beyond the Bones
Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Stephen Gatesy, working with John R. Hutchinson, created a science-based computer animation of a walking Tyrannosaurus rex for a new exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. See also Providence Journal* article on this topic. The Light at the End of the Universe
Gregory Tucker, associate professor of physics, was on the team of scientists who, peering back to the oldest light in the universe, found evidence that at the outset of the Big Bang, the universe expanded many trillion times its size faster than a snap of the fingers.
School Reform Program Reaches Far Beyond College Hill
The Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) Support and Capacity Building Program, run in part by the Education Alliance at Brown, is helping to build the capacity of underperforming schools in the Northeast and along the Eastern Seaboard.

The "Brown Spring Forum: Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Technology" includes speakers on entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, behavioral investing, world economic competition, technology trends, and rebuilding the World Trade Center. The Entrepreneurship Program's business plan competition is the finale. See schedule and register online.

Brown Among Nation's Best in NCAA Academic Rankings
Brown ranked second overall this year with 24 of its teams rated in the top 10 percent of the NCAA Academic Progress Rates. Brown is one of only four schools in the nation to have more than 20 teams in the top 10 percent.

Joe Paterno '50 Honored by NCAA

The legendary Penn State football coach and Brown Athletics Hall of Fame member was selected as one of the NCAA's "100 Most Influential Student-Athletes."
Winter Academic All-Ivy Team Includes Ten Brown Athletes
Five male and five female athletes made the list of student-athletes selected for All-Ivy Academic honors in winter sports ranging from track to basketball to fencing.
