Ulmer, Ph.D., founder and president of Providence–based Genome Corporation, has been involved in human genome sequencing efforts for over 20 years––technology that will soon be affordable by the masses. Why would we want to look at our own genomes and what might we find? He will discuss the technological pioneers and the brave few who have already taken an intimate look at themselves. Students from the Brown, Harvard and Yale debate teams will meet for an exhibition tournament that promises to provide a stimulating evening of debate addressing current events and important social issues. Westchester high school students in the audience will be selected to participate in the second debate, teamed with a partner from Brown, Harvard or Yale.

Start the holiday season with a festive wine tasting event graciously hosted by Peter ’83 and Holly Ruhlin. The Chace Center, designed by Pulitzer Prize–winning architect Jose Rafael Moneo, melds exhibition galleries with public venues with studios and classrooms, creating a center where art is made, studied and enjoyed. Internationally renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly (RISD MFA ’68) created a special site–specific installation for the Center’s exhibition gallery, complemented by work from other glass artists who were students during or after Chihuly’s time at RISD. Kenneth Miller, professor of biology, will explore arguments in favor of evolution and of intelligent design and offer a behind–the–scenes look at recent evolution cases. Gordon Wood, professor emeritus of history, will speak about how the founding fathers’ desire to be learned across an array of subjects and to be viewed as selfless made them such exceptional intellectual and political leaders. Hemon creates an epic narrative born from a historical event, the 1908 killing of Lazarus Averbuch, a 19–year–old Jewish immigrant who was shot dead by George Shippy, the chief of Chicago police, after being admitted into his home to deliver an important letter. The mystery of what really happened that day remains unsolved. Cost: Free.

In nineteenth–century China, when women were foot–bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code: nu shu (“women’s writing”). This film addresses President John F. Kennedy’s decision making under pressure to go to war. The film is directed by Visiting Fellow Koji Masutani ’05 and produced by Professor James G. An Afternoon at the Theatre: Ruined by Lynn Nottage ’86

Lynn Nottage has established herself as one of America’s foremost young playwrights. Her play, Ruined, will be produced off–Broadway in early 2009 and is described as a captivating and heartbreaking homage to the courageous and resilient women living through civil war in the Congo. Habitat Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Bob Salter ’63, leader of the Anthem Mountain Toppers and a geologist, will lead a hike with a running commentary on the rocks along the way. It is a moderate hiking trail –– about 3 miles round trip with about 500 ft. of elevation gain in each direction. Meet in the parking lot at the trail head. Wear hiking boots or very sturdy walking shoes, carry at least a liter of liquid, wear a hat and bring a walking stick if desired. Cost: Free.
