Children At Play: An American History

Howard Chudacoff, professor of history, has recently completed a book on the history of children’s play in the U.S. from colonial times to the present, examining shifting trends and the alternative/oppositional interactions between how children played and how adults thought and wanted children to play. Volunteers help to get food ready to be distributed to soup kitchens, food pantries, after-school programs, and all of the other 600+ places that feed people in need for free throughout the city. Volunteers will sort donations from food drives and grocery stores, repackage bulk items into more useful portions, glean and box fresh produce, or stock grocery shelves.

A Meeting of the Minds Seminar
John Marston, professor of physics, will speak about the crucial, but often overlooked role, which quantum mechanics plays in determining the Earth’s climate. He will present a simple physical picture of what will happen to the Earth as the concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide continue to increase. At the age of 16, Hikaru Nakamura became the 2005 US Champion. He broke the record of becoming the youngest Grand Master in American history at the age of 10. He is the highest rated player on the Internet Chess Club. Be a participant or a spectator at this original event! Cost: $50 for each of the 30 participants, $20 for spectators. In a city struck by a “white blindness” epidemic, the blind are confined to a vacant hospital under armed guard. When the compound is set ablaze, they escape into a deserted city littered with corpses. Enter your short films for the annual Brown Filmmakers Showcase to be held in March. This is an on-going effort to recognize alumni work in the areas of film and entertainment. Join us for the first of our new hidden museum series to be held one Saturday/month. Visitors to the LES Tenement Museum have the unique opportunity to visit historically preserved tenements that chronicle the lives of immigrants in the late 19th century. Tour lasts ~ 60-90 minutes followed by a Q & A in Orchard 88, a nearby café. Cost: $10.
