Children At Play: An American History
Featuring Professor Howard Chudacoff

Howard Chudacoff, professor of history, has recently completed a book on the history of children's play in the U.S. from colonial times to the present, examining shifting trends and the alternative/oppositional interactions between how children played and how adults thought and wanted children to play. Monthly Book Club: How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill

Cahill gives readers an illuminating look into a crucial, but little-known piece of history. He takes us to the island of saints and scholars in unconquered Ireland where monks and scribes labored during the “dark ages” to preserve the West’s written treasury.

Holiday Community Service: San Francisco Food Bank

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, SF Food Bank Warehouse, 900 Pennsylvania Ave. (at 23rd St)
Volunteers help to get food ready to be distributed to soup kitchens, food pantries, after-school programs, and all of the other 600+ places that feed people in need for free throughout the city. Volunteers will sort donations from food drives and grocery stores, repackage bulk items into more useful portions, glean and box fresh produce, or stock grocery shelves.

Join the Brown Club for some socializing and a quick bite to eat at the Zoo's cafe before heading out to see the zoo transformed into a winter wonderland, aglow with nearly a million lights. Displays include more than 200 animated animals and a perfect-for-photos light sculpture featuring a dozen animals. A Meeting of the Minds Seminar
John Marston, professor of physics, will speak about the crucial, but often overlooked role, which quantum mechanics plays in determining the Earth’s climate.  He will present a simple physical picture of what will happen to the Earth as the concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide continue to increase.  Cost: $10 club members, $20 non-members/guests.

30 vs. 1 Simultaneous Chess Match Against the Top U.S. Chess Grandmaster

At the age of 16, Hikaru Nakamura became the 2005 US Champion. He broke the record of becoming the youngest Grand Master in American history at the age of 10.  He is the highest rated player on the Internet Chess Club.  Be a participant or a spectator at this original event!  Cost: $50 for each of the 30 participants, $20 for spectators. All tickets include choice of lunch and drink. There are no refunds, but you can transfer your spot to a friend/or relative.

Monthly Book Club: Blindness by Jose Saramago

In a city struck by a "white blindness” epidemic, the blind are confined to a vacant hospital under armed guard. When the compound is set ablaze, they escape into a deserted city littered with corpses. Blindness is a novel of loss and disorientation in the modern world, and man's will to survive against all odds. Cost: $5 - $7 for dinner contribution.

Neal Kemkar '01 & Phil Ugelow '01 are graciously hosting a 4th of July BBQ potluck. As a bonus, their third roommate is going to make it a Texas A&M young alumni event too! Join them for Brown vs. A&M games of flip cup out on the patio, the first annual blue v. red foosball tourney, and possibly even bocce on the nearby bocce pitch! They'll have the meat (real and fake) - bring your favorite summertime dish/dessert, a six pack and a friend. Cost: Free.

Recording artist James Tormé is as influenced by his multi-Grammy-winning father, Mel, as he is by the pop/R&B with which he grew up. Cool Globes, founded by Wendy Abrams '87, is an innovative project that uses public art to inspire individuals and organizations to take action against global warming. Annual Summer Picnic

Thanks once again to the generosity of Peter '63 and Jill McDonald, alumni get to soak up the sun on approximately 360 acres of working hazelnut and timber farm. There will be a swimming pool, tennis courts (must bring white shoes and your own equipment to play tennis), volleyball, frisbee, croquet, and all sorts of barbequed goodies. Families and kids are welcome; no pets please. Cost: $10 adults, $5 children (under 16), $5 current student, $5 recent grad ('06-'07).

A repeat of last year's sucessful summer reception, this event will be held in the ballroom of the Savile Club, a special elegant atmosphere for socializing and networking.
