The 2nd Annual Chicago Public Schools Teacher for a Day event provides an opportunity for business and community members to gain a better understanding of and develop a deeper appreciation of the work of Chicago Public School teachers. Your day begins at the school and classroom to which you are assigned and closes with an informal luncheon at your school with the teachers and other faculty members. Cost: Free.

Monthly Bookclub: The Places In Between by Rory Stewart

In January 2002, Rory Stewart began a walk across Afghanistan from Herat to Kabul. Although the Taliban had been ousted several weeks earlier, Stewart launched a journey through a devastated, unsettled, and unsafe landscape. The recounting of that journey makes for an engrossing, surprising, and often deeply moving portrait of the land and the peoples who inhabit it. Cost: Free.

Chafee ’75, distinguished visiting fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies, for a multifaceted discussion on his experiences over seven years in the U.S. Senate. The talk will include Senator Chafee’s perspectives on major political occurrences during this period: The vote to go to war in Iraq, Bush’s tax cut program, the 2004 election and the return of Congress to a Democratic majority. Laura Prieto, associate professor of history and women’s studies at Simmons College, will be focusing on Anne Garlin Spencer, the first woman ordained as a minister in Rhode Island. From The New Yorker: An examination of the life of Sir Edward Feathers, a desiccated barrister known to colleagues and friends as Old Filth (stands for "Failed in London Try Hong Kong"). After a lucrative career in Asia, Filth settles into retirement in Dorset. Gardam reveals that, contrary to appearances, Sir Edward's life is seething with incident. Cost: Free.

A Night at the Royal Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty

In the much-loved classical ballet, Princess Aurora is cursed and fated to die after pricking her finger on a spindle on her 16th birthday. Through the intervention of the Lilac Fairy, the curse is commuted to a long sleep from which she is awoken by Prince Florimund. Music is by Tchaikovsky. Cost: £35 for non-members; £25 for members.

Join fellow alumni for the premier screening of this film about Beijing during the summer before the 2008 Olympic Games - the first time they will be hosted in China. The frantic preparation for the games has turned Beijing into a hotspot of rapid growth. But what do the games mean to the ordinary Chinese? An 11 year-old boy wants to become torch bearer. A road sweeper dreams of staging his own Olympics count-down performance. An aging blind athlete makes one last stab at a Paralympics medal before he retires. Light refreshments will be served. Combining two genres, that of alternate history and the hard-boiled detective story, this novel is about the Federal District of Sitka, Alaska, the "temporary" safe haven created for Jewish refugees after the 1948 collapse of Israel. The story is set on the eve of the district's reversion to Alaskan control, an event that is poised to plunge its populace into unknown territory. Cost: Free.
