In the context of globalization and the post 9/11 world, the study of foreign languages and the development of
trans-cultural skills have begun to occupy a focal position in University curricula in Europe and the USA. Elissavet Amanatidou, senior lecturer in classics, will examine old and new ideas pertaining to language study and will look at current practices at the University level, as well as instances where a "foreign" language was used to create a bridge between certain speakers and the communities they addressed. Cummins received the Excellent Corporate Citizenship Award for their ongoing efforts in the area of corporate responsibility and has been selected for the U.S. Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence. Walking Tour of the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights at Sunset

Catch up with Brown alumni and friends on this guided walking tour across the length of the bridge, where you will learn the dramatic story behind its creation and early history. Then stroll through Victorian Brooklyn Heights, one of New York’s earliest landmark districts. Once a home to wealthy 19th century merchants and 20th century writers, the neighborhood’s sites include Plymouth Church, where Lincoln and Walt Whitman worshipped; the Brooklyn Promenade; the homes of author Arthur Miller and Dodger great Duke Snider; and where Truman Capote penned Breakfast at Tiffany’s. He Who Burns by Wendy Jehlen ’94

He Who Burns explores the figure of Iblis (Satan) in some Sufi traditions. The show combines Capoeira, Butoh, Contact Improv, African dance and American Sign Language poetry. Jehlen's emotionally powerful choreography has been performed throughout the US, Europe, India and in Japan. Her work is informed by her study of storytelling and literature from around the world and her collaboration with deaf performers and poets. Cost: $18 club members/guests (discounted price).

Sherine Hamdy, assistant professor of anthropology, will discuss The Organ Transplant Debate in Egypt: A Social Anthropological Analysis and Ian Straughn, the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology, will discuss Al-Azhar Park and Fustat: Thoughts on Cairo’s future as an Islamic Heritage City. Enjoy a fun-filled evening at CulinAerie, downtown Washington's new high-end cooking school, for an iron chef competition featuring Brown alumni in a cooking challenge against Penn alumni. An independent panel will judge the results, and fans (maximum of 15 per school) will cheer on their teams over wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres provided by the CulinAerie staff.

Dragon Boat Races

Represent Brown in this special event and paddle a 41 foot boat on a 250 meter course along beautiful Buffalo Bayou. No experience necessary. Food, drinks, and dragon boat t-shirts will be provided for each paddler. Team members are encouraged to attend a practice session on Saturday, 4/25 from 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm to learn more about this 2000 year old tradition. Event team captains are: Chris "Lightning Fast" Hayes ’03, Eric "Super" Mueller ’02, and Katherine "The Great" Babcock ’05. Fifteen additional alumni and friends, including a minimum of 6 women rowers, are needed. Cost: TBD.
