September 13, 2005
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Brown has mobilized to respond both as an educational institution and as a community.
On campus, nearly half of the 61 displaced undergraduate students who will enroll at Brown this semester attended orientation on Friday, and 21 other students have also been offered admission. At least 28 students will join the Graduate School, and several faculty will also make Brown their temporary home.

Our thoughts remain with all who have been so deeply affected by this disaster.
With best wishes,

Hanna B. Rodriguez-Farrar '87, '90 A.M.

Sharp Boundaries in Earth's Layers
A team led by a Brown student shows a sharp boundary exists between Earth's outermost shell and its more pliable layer beneath. The findings are strong evidence that temperature alone can't account for difference between the regions, which allow plate tectonics to occur.
