Bears Gain NCAA Men's Tennis Berth For Third Time in Four Years
Men's tennis completed an undefeated Ivy season with a win over Yale and gained the Ivy League's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The team is 23-5 overall.

The Handoff
Director of Admission Michael Goldberger will become Brown’s director of athletics on July 1, the same day that Ruth Simmons begins her two-year term as chair of the Council of Ivy Group Presidents. Goldberger talked briefly with the BAM two weeks after his appointment.

Steven Lubar, who arrived at Brown from the Smithsonian Institution, where he chaired the Division of the History of Technology, has begun building Brown's public humanities program in the Department of American Civilization.

Reunion Classes Nearing Record
The 0's and 5's are expected to set a new record for reunion giving to the Brown Annual Fund. Collectively, alumni celebrating a reunion this year have already committed $6.3 million to support the Plan for Academic Enrichment. Details for each class are available online.

Clinton Packs Meehan Auditorium
Brown's student Democrats hosted the Northeast College Democrats Conference on April 29 – May 1, and the whole campus got a bonus when keynote speaker William J. Clinton agreed to deliver a public address.

Brown University to Confer 10 Honorary Degrees on May 29
Candidates for honorary degrees, to be conferred on Sunday, May 29, include environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, philanthropist Sidney E. Frank '42, actress Phylicia Rashad, financier William Rhodes '57, and six others.

C.D. Wright's "One Big Self" on Campus Through May 29
Bell Gallery is featuring two photographic exhibitions – "One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana" and "The Omega Suites." Both depict aspects of U.S. prisons. Photographer Deborah Luster and Brown poet/MacArthur winner C.D. Wright collaborated on "One Big Self."

kim boekelheide Improving Approaches to Toxic Waste
Through a federal grant establishing Brown as a Superfund research center, a team led by Professor of Medical Science Kim Boekelheide will investigate new ways to protect health and aid the environment.

Coming Home
Roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades have produced more non-lethal wounds in Iraq than in any other U.S. war. In response, a multidisciplinary group of Brown researchers is using new technologies to help the seriously wounded resume their lives.

Four Brown Faculty Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Poet C.D. Wright, anthropologist David Kertzer ’69, engineer Rodney Clifton, and historian Omer Bartov have been elected fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a distinction of excellence in science, scholarship, business, public affairs, and the arts.
