Brown Travelers Newsletter
Issue No. 4, October 2006

Dear Brown Alumni and Friends,

Many of our Brown Travelers tell us that they continue to travel with Brown because of the insight and perspective the Brown faculty members provide. Some people choose trips based largely upon the faculty member and his/her knowledge of the destination. For 2007 we have recruited many veteran as well as new faculty to enrich our travelers’ experiences.

On Ancient Traditions of Guatemala (March 3-11), this trip will be Professor David Lindstrom's first with the Brown Travelers. However, the former Director of Brown's Center for Latin American Studies and current Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Sociology (as well as core faculty associate of the Population Studies and Training Center) is no stranger to addressing alumni groups. Professor Lindstrom has spoken to Brown Clubs and Associations and is looking forward to spending more time with alumni in a place he knows well.

Professor Hal Roth (Professor of Religious Studies and East Asian Studies) traveled with us to China in 2005 and very much looks forward to joining us for our upcoming Treasures of Japan (April 18-28). Alumni who traveled with Professor Roth last year came back saying that they would go anywhere with him and specifically asked for Japan. If you're interested in this trip, register soon, before all of the passengers from his previous trip beat you to it!

We are very pleased that Martha Sharp Joukowsky '58, Emerita Professor in the Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the Department of Anthropology, has agreed to be our faculty lecturer on Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (April 21 – May 2). Professor Joukowsky, who welcomed the Brown Travelers to Petra a few years ago, will explore Egypt, Greece and Turkey with the group as they investigate the sites of the original Seven Wonders.

I hope to see you on a future Brown Travelers educational adventure! You can find more information on the above or any of our trips on our Web site.

Passenger Profiles

From time to time, we will profile some of our past passengers.  If you have an experience, story or photo from a past Brown Travelers trip that you would like to share with us, please feel free to contact us at Brown_Travelers@alumni.brown.edu.

Barbara A. Piscuskas '56, P'79, P'80, P'83, P'85 (Massachusetts)

Barbara has traveled with the Brown Travelers many times over the past several years and has enjoyed all of her trips, including her most recent, to Russia. As a single traveler, Barbara typically brings a friend along to share the experience. A few years ago, on a Brown Travelers program, she met another Brown alumna. There was a 10-year class difference between them, yet they hit it off. Now, even though they are in different areas of the country, they try to coordinate trips together.

Joan B. Wood '63 (Connecticut)

Joan has traveled with Brown on a few different trips, including the Italian Riviera, Ireland and the Adriatic Riviera/Slovenia – her favorite and most recent trip. Since many of the activities on these programs are done as a group, she doesn't feel like a "single" traveler. Joan feels that the Brown groups are very compatible and cohesive. Her biggest piece of advice? "Take as many trips as you can!"
