Brown Travelers Newsletter
Issue No. 8, May 2008

Dear Brown Alumni and Friends,

At this time of year, Brown’s entire Alumni Relations office is getting ready for the upcoming Reunion weekend, and I am putting the finishing touches on our 2009 Brown Travelers schedule. Some brochures for 2009 trips are already prepared, and the next e-newsletter will have a link to the full schedule. In the meantime, 2008 is still very much with us, and I’d like to highlight a few new features of some upcoming trips.

Our Alumni College in Normandy & Brittany departs July 4 and there are a few rooms remaining. If you book quickly you can still take advantage of the Early Booking Discount ($100 per person), which has been extended to May 13. In addition, I’m pleased to announce that Lewis Seifert, Associate Professor of French Studies, will represent Brown on this wonderful trip.

I encourage you to look closely at our October 10 departure to Cyprus (with an optional extension to Jordan). We have not sponsored a trip to Cyprus in over a decade, and this exciting destination promises an enlightening journey, especially since it will be accompanied by Brown Travelers favorite Bill Wyatt, Emeritus Professor of Classics.

Finally, From the Ruins of Pompeii to the Walls of Troy, which departs October 20, will take passengers on an adventure through history, visiting parts of Italy, Tunisia, Malta, Turkey and Greece. Perfect for those traveling alone, there will be no single supplement charged. And if you book by May 30, you can receive a free pre-trip night in Naples and tour of Pompeii.

For more information on these and any of our other trips, please visit our Web site. I hope you will join us soon on a Brown Travelers educational adventure. And if you’re coming to Reunion weekend, please say, “Hello” – not only will I be working, but I’m celebrating a Reunion (my 20th) too!

Faculty Profile

It’s been more than a year since we profiled a faculty member in this space, so we thought for this edition we would introduce you to Anthony Oldcorn, Emeritus Professor of Italian Studies, who has been the faculty lecturer on no fewer than eight Brown Travelers trips.

If you have an experience, story or photo from a past Brown Travelers trip that you would like to share with us, please feel free to contact us at Brown_Travelers@alumni.brown.edu.

Passengers on Brown Travelers trips have often cited the faculty member’s participation as the best aspect of the trip and the reason they continue to travel with Brown. As one of our highest-rated faculty lecturers, Tony Oldcorn has been sharing his knowledge and love of Italy – especially its language and literature – with Brown alumni and friends for more than a decade.

When asked why he thought that Brown Travelers list the faculty as one of their top reasons for traveling, Tony stated that Brown alumni are loyal to Brown because they had such a good experience there. He feels that their positive experience in school extends to their travel experience; it’s as if they are in school again, “ready to learn and have fun.” Since there are no papers or exams they are a relaxed group who are also “exceptionally nice.” According to Tony, past alumni with whom he has traveled “have been intelligent, pleasant and mature; all the qualities you want your students to be.”

Paul White ’68 and his wife, Cindy, traveled with Tony in 2006 to Tuscany (pictured above). They felt that both his knowledge of the area and his personality made him the ideal faculty lecturer and companion. Paul said that Tony, whom he described as “a real gem,” was unbelievably personable to the entire group and helped the group bond together. The Whites, who live in Pennsylvania, met several Brown alumni from different areas and class years on the trip, and they have kept in contact. Paul said that when they travel again with Brown, they hope to travel with Tony, who they felt “made the trip very special.”

Tony says that his favorite destination is his next destination. With that thought in mind, if you’re interested in traveling with Tony on his next trip, he will accompany the Brown Travelers this fall (October 15-23) on our Alumni College in the Umbrian Hill Towns / Spoleto, and there are rooms available. In fact, if you book by June 17, you can still take advantage of the Early Booking Discount ($100 per person) AND receive an additional $100 per person discount. Contact our office for more information and/or a full trip brochure.
