Brown Travelers Newsletter
Issue No. 2, March 2006

Dear Brown Alumni and Friends,

The month of March brings to mind the picturesque landscape of the Emerald Isle. Join your fellow Brown Travelers this summer, June 5th to 16th, as we travel the beautiful country of Ireland. Visit the often missed Aran Islands and several other wonderful spots while gaining a unique perspective from one of our favorite faculty members, Perry Curtis, Emeritus Professor of History. Irish eyes are smiling because the "early booking discount" has been extended.

There is also space still available for "Treasures of Japan," May 7th to 18th. Kerry Smith, Associate Professor of History, will provide historical insight into Japanese culture as you journey to some of Japan's most fascinating places.

The early booking discount has also been extended for our very popular Alumni College in Tuscany. And I'm pleased to announce that Tony Oldcorn, Emeritus Professor of Italian Studies, will be our faculty lecturer. Visit the architectural wonder of Renaissance Florence, learn the essence of Tuscan cooking, enjoy a private tour of a winery in Montalcino and much more.

You can travel the globe this summer too. There are several trips planned, from Russia to the Adriatic Riviera to Ukraine. I hope to see you on a future Brown Travelers educational adventure! For more information about any of our trips, please check out our Web site.

A:  It's an easy way to travel for a single traveler; I go on more adventuresome trips because I am traveling with a group with common interests.

A:  Kenya. My parents also traveled on the trip and it was a nice way to travel with my family. We could enjoy time together or apart.

Q:  Travel tips for future travelers?
A:  Go while you can - especially the more exotic trips. Life is short.

Interview with Joan and Karl Lauenstein '57 (Virginia)

Q: Why do you enjoy traveling with Brown Travelers?
A:  The trips are appealing because of destinations and types of trips, traveling with a small group, and you have a common starting point with other travelers.

Q:  What has been your favorite trip? Why?
A:  China, because of the total impact of seeing different environments, large cities to villages, and the quality of the accommodations.

Q:  Travel tips for future travelers?
A:  The key thing is to pack wash/wear, light weight (nylon), basically informal clothes that are easy to layer and wear COMFORTABLE SHOES. Know where you are going and why.
