Brown Travelers Newsletter
Issue No. 3, July 2006

Dear Brown Alumni and Friends,

With summer upon us, many of us recall fond memories of piling in the station wagon and traveling with the family. These days, traveling with the family can be more comfortable and time spent together can be much less stressful. In this month's issue, our Passenger Profiles include two different families who have turned recent Brown Travelers trips into family vacation reunions.

If you are the type to plan far in advance, be sure to check out our preview of the Brown Travelers 2007 schedule! It features old favorites, like Italy and Alaska, alongside exciting new destinations, such as Guatemala and Bhutan.

Or, if you prefer to act on shorter notice, we have three fall trips with space still available.  Our September trip to Crete, the largest island in the Greek archipelago, includes stays in both Heraklion and Hania. Bill Wyatt, Emeritus Professor of Classics at Brown, is looking forward to sharing his knowledge of this area with the Travelers.

Our October departure to Dresden and Berlin features Duncan Smith, one of our most popular Brown Travelers faculty lecturers. On the most recent trip he accompanied, every passenger who returned an evaluation form rated him as "Excellent" in every category.  Many people on his trips have noted that he was the main reason they decided to take a particular trip.

And, finally, our exciting trip to India... I'm pleased to announce that Peter Harrington, Curator of Brown's Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection, will be our faculty lecturer for this trip.  Space is extremely limited on this special Brown departure, so call soon if you are interested.

I hope to see you on a future Brown Travelers educational adventure! For more information about any of our trips, please check out our Web site.

Interview with Elaine and Roger DuBrock '64 (Alaska)

Elaine and Roger DuBrock traveled earlier this year to the Galápagos Islands with their five adult children. They decided to take a Brown Travelers trip because of the interesting itinerary and the ease of making reservations for travelers spread out over the continent. Past experiences with Brown Travelers have been enriching, their traveling companions are interesting and interested in their destination and the Brown lecturer added insight into the trip. The DuBrocks chose the Galápagos trip because of their active lifestyle - the family hiked and scuba dived together and then sat down at the end of the day to share a meal. Since their kids' ages vary (from 19 to 39), the trip allowed them to reconnect with one another. Elaine and Roger were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, but it was also a reunion for the entire family to enjoy.

Interview with Sandy and Tom Dimeo '52 (Rhode Island)

Sandy and Tom Dimeo have traveled on several Brown trips. They chose to travel with their four adult children and spouses to the Western Mediterranean in 2005 to celebrate a special birthday. The trip provided a wonderful treat for them, to see it through their children's eyes. It took considerable coordination, because most of their children have small children, but it was well worth the effort. One of the reasons they chose this trip was because it was a small ship and also because the travel company does a very good job. And of course, "Traveling with Brown is a unique experience because the faculty is very good and a huge addition." Since there were ten traveling in their party, they made special arrangements to travel in their own small bus touring on shore, which allowed them to gain more family time. The flexibility of a cruise also let some family members pick different excursions from the others.  The Dimeos look forward to another Brown trip in the near future.
