Dear Brown Alumni and Friends,
These days everyone is looking for a good value, and there are several great values to be found this spring and early summer with the Brown Travelers.
If you have been thinking about our Alumni College in Spain (April 28–May 8) or Saxony Cruise & Prague (May 8–16) programs, now is the time to register. The “early booking discount” deadlines on both trips have been extended to March 3, and if you book the Spain trip by that date you will receive an additional $100 off per person (double the advertised discount). I’m also very pleased to announce that Duncan Smith, Emeritus Professor of German Studies and Modern Culture and Media, has agreed to be our faculty lecturer on the Saxony Cruise program.
Our Alumni College in Greece (June 5–14) was very well-reviewed when we offered it a few years ago, and I’m happy to report that the faculty lecturer on that previous departure — Bill Wyatt, Emeritus Professor of Classics — will accompany our group this year as well. Another good value, the “early booking discount” on this trip has been doubled to $200 per person ($400 per couple) and the deadline to receive the discount has been extended to March 17.
The “early booking discount” deadline has also been extended on our Norway's Fjords, the North Cape and Russia's White Sea (July 3–15) program, to March 6. Book by that date to save $500 per person ($1,000 per couple).
Finally, something new for the new year — we’ve added one additional trip to our 2009 schedule. A familiar itinerary with some new twists, Celtic Lands (August 22–September 2) will visit Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, England and France on one of our favorite ships, the M.S. Le Diamant. This trip also offers a discount of $500 per person ($1,000 per couple) if you make your reservation by March 6.
For details on these and any of our other trips, please visit our website or contact our office. I hope you will join us soon on a Brown Travelers educational adventure.

Faculty Profile
The Brown Travelers are very excited that Gordon Wood, Professor Emeritus of History and Alva O. Way University Professor Emeritus, will accompany our group on this summer’s Aegean Odyssey, from Istanbul to Athens aboard Sea Cloud (July 7–17). Professor Wood is one of Brown’s most popular lecturers and a Pulitzer Prize winning author.

Professor Gordon Wood
One of the attractions for Professor Wood on this trip is traveling on Sea Cloud. As he is well aware, the sailing yacht, which now accommodates 60 passengers, was originally owned by E.F. Hutton and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.
While enjoying the elegant four-masted ship and fascinating itinerary — with stops in Kusadasi/Ephesus, Bodrum, Delos, Santorini and Navplion — Professor Wood plans to lecture on the origins and history of democracy, from ancient times to modern democracy in the United States.
Professor Wood explains that, while he enjoys teaching Brown students, he also likes working with adults. He teaches a seminar every summer to about 30 teachers about history, and he enjoys the give-and-take and discussions that take place in that setting. He’s hoping for the same sorts of discussions on this trip — not just lectures, but discussions.
Professor Wood very much looks forward to this Brown Travelers trip along the coast of Turkey and through the Greek Isles and to meeting and traveling with Brown alumni and friends.
If you’d like more information about Professor Wood and this Aegean Odyssey, please see the full trip brochure or contact our office.
