Dear Fellow Alumni,
Welcome to the Brown Club of Rhode Island (BCRI).
As our club enters its ninety-first year of operation, the officers and directors are excited to move forward to undertake what is shaping up to be an outstanding year of club events covering arts and culture, music, academics, sports, community service, and theatre, to name but a few of our activities.
Once again this past club year, we were able to present the Jean & Francis Madeira “Excellence in Music” award, established in 1981, to a graduating senior in the Brown Music Department, to further his/her career in music. The most recent recipient is Liam Hynes ’12 who will pursue a master’s degree in music composition. In addition, Liam wishes to teach and to continue to perform (cello) after graduate school.
Since 2007, the Jean & Francis Madeira award has been funded exclusively through membership fees from the BCRI’s “Premium Membership Program. “ At that time, the club’s Board of Directors determined that all Brown alumni in the Rhode Island & Southeastern Massachusetts areas would automatically become members of the BCRI at no charge. The “Premium Member” of this new membership category, would pay an annual fee, 100% of which would fund the Madeira award. The program has been very successful, raising $2,500.00 or better each year.
In 2008-2009, in order to attract younger alumni to the BCRI, the Premium Membership annual fee was amended to provide reduced membership fees for young alumni.
The fees for this year are:
- First year alumni, in this year’s case, the class of 2012, would automatically become Premium Members at no charge;
- Young alumni, i.e. ’08-’11: $10.00 per year;
- All other alumni, parents and friends of Brown: $30.00 per year.
Perks of becoming a Premium Member are (l) Discounted admission to many BCRI events; (ll) Complimentary admission to the club’s Holiday reception; (lll) Personal notification of all regular club events; and (lV) Early notification of events where space is limited.
Please plan to join us for this coming academic, club year as we embark upon a new era of Brown under the leadership of President Christina Hull Paxson.
Ever true,
John Andrews ’53 President, 2012-2013
