Brown Derbies in Baltimore
The Brown Club of Greater Baltimore was pleased to present the Brown
Derbies, one of Brown's finest a capella singing groups at Johnny Dee's Banquet Hall in Parkville on March 26, 2008. A group of alumni, family and friends enjoyed the the Brown Derbies' performance and meeting the singers.

Bill Streuver '74 and Desa Sealy Ruffin '86 spoke on Tuesday, November 13 2007 bout their joint venture, the development of the American Brewery site in East Baltimore. The popular luncheon event was held at the newly opened Woodberry Kitchen at Clipper Mill. About forty alumni and friends enjoyed hearing about the American Brewery transformation as well as other projects underway and/or planned for Baltimore and for Providence.

The Annual Meeting/Planning
Party was held at Cantler's in Annapolis on September 23, 2007. We reviewed events of the prior year and discussed ideas for this year's calendar of events. Sitting on the deck, eating crabs and watching sailboats on the river on a beautiful sunny September day...provided much inspiration for the task at hand. ***
Woodhall Wine Cellars - Tour and Tasting, Alumni, friends, and family enjoyed a private tour and guided tasting at Woodhall Wine Cellars in Baltimore County on Saturday, June 23rd, 2007. Accompanying the wines was a selection of gourmet artisanal cheeses and classic accompaniments.

Baltimore Crime Lab Alumni and family members, as guests of the Baltimore City Police Department, learned about "real" forensic science, crime, and law enforcement in Baltimore at the Baltimore Crime Lab on June 14, 2007 . Before the tour, Brown alums met over breakfast at The Big Apple Tree Cafe.***
Professor John J. Stein, Ph.D. of Brown's Department of Neuroscience, a member of the Brain Science faculty, spoke to BCGB members and guests at the Enoch Pratt Library on Thursday May 3, 2007 . He addressed questions such as, how does knowledge of the biology behind simple behaviors such as reflexes allow us to approach answers to more challenging behaviors such as learning, memory and movement. Club members learned about the biological basis of human behavior, with a close look at the inner workings of human brains and heard about exciting current research at Brown into the mental processes through which we sense the environment, acquire knowledge, and generate appropriate movements. ***
Admitted But Not Committed Party.
The club's third annual Admitted But Not Committed Party was held on Sunday April 15, 2007 . Many alumni got together with local high school seniors admitted to Brown’s class of 2011 at the law offices of Tydings & Rosenberg overlookin Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Jabberwocks
Brown's oldest a capella singing group, the Jabberwocks, performed for over 50 Brown alumni and friends on January 16, 2007 at the Johns Hopkins Club.

Professor Vorenberg's talk
Professor Vorenberg spoke on May 10, 2006, at the Hopkins Club about "Abraham Lincoln, Slavery, and the Tangled Legacies of Civil War Emancipation". He examined the contested memory of Abraham Lincoln’s involvement with emancipation, and although he touched on some old questions, such as “Was Lincoln really the Great Emancipator?”, he took a fresh approach by examining emancipation from the perspective of historical memory. Professor Vorenberg answered audience members' questions about his talk as well as his research and his experience participating on Brown’s Slavery and Justice Committee. It made for an xtremely interesting and educational evening.

Parade of Sail, Volvo Ocean Race
 A group of Brown alum was among the guests of Ed St. John and Sharon Ackers on May 4, 2006. We accompanied the Volvo Ocean Race sail boats on Ed's yacht as they made their way from Baltimore harbor to Annapolis. The day was perfect: sunny and warm, with just enough breeze to keep us from burning up. After arriving in Annapolis, we were invited to tour the USS equoia, the former presidential yacht. I think it can safely be said that a good time was had by all!

Admitted Not Committed Party
In April 2006 , we held our second annual Admitted Not Committed party for local seniors admitted to Brown. Held atop one of the Inner Harbor office buildings, Brown alums tried to convince local seniors to leave the beautiful Chesapeake Bay for the equally lovely Naragansett Bay. Although most of the seniors at the event had already made up their mind (to go to Brown!), I think we did convince the few undecideds to continue their life in Brunonia's halls.
***Chattertocks Performance
 The big event in January 2006 was a performance by the Chattertocks, an all female a cappella group from Brown. A large crowd of alumni from various years was on hand to enjoy the beautiful music produced by these lovely ladies. Afterwards, the audience and the singers hung around, drank cocktails and chatted until kicked out of the stately Maryland Club. (Not without first seeing the monstrous stuffed grizzly bear on the first floor.) We thank the hattertocks for enlivening our winter with their voices and charm.

Yearly Meeting
On October 2nd, 2005, we held our first anniversary party/meeting at the McClees' house in Severna Park. There was a great turnout for the potluck meal and organizational meeting. After reviewing the events from the previous year (baseball games, interviewing applicants, community service, Admitted Not Committed party, etc), we focused on what we should focus on during the upcoming year. We decided that we needed a mission statement, and the following three components emerged as the primary mission of BCGB:
- to create a community for Brown alumni to meet, network, socialize, and learn
- to assist in attracting top high school students from diverse backgrounds for entry into Brown
- to make a more visible contribution to the greater Baltimore community
The final outcome of the meeting was that we would focus on three major events this year: a second annual Admitted Not Committed party; a talk by a Brown professor; and another annual planning party in the Fall. In addition, we will continue to have smaller events, including semi-egular bookclub meetings and happy hours at local bars; community service events; and other vents suggested by members.
Overall, it was great to see so many people show up and participate in the meeting, and we are all looking forward to a productive and fun 2006.
