Join us for a very timely faculty lecture and discussion with Brown Professor Jennifer Lawless, who will examine the dynamics of the 2008 presidential election, highlighting the good, the bad, and the ugly, and will assess the prospects for victory and governing for Barack Obama and John McCain. Professor Lawless is a nationally recognized political science expert who specializes in women and politics, public opinion and statistics, and in 2006 was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Rhode Island's second congressional district. AVON THEATER MOVIE SCREENING OF "FREDERICK DOUGLASS: PATHWAY FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDOM" FOLLOWED BY OPEN DISCUSSION WITH PRODUCER TIM SMITH '75
Join us at the Avon Theater in Stamford for the premiere screening of a new film produced by Brown alum Tim Smith '75, Frederick Douglass: Pathway from Slavery to Freedom, that will subsequently be aired in February 2009 on PBS as part of the series Young American Heroes. Douglass (born February 1818) was an American abolitionist, editor, orator, author, statesman and reformer. In 1872, Douglass was nominated as the vice presidential candidate on the Equal Rights Party ticket with Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president of the United States.
Filming for this production has taken place in Essex, Mystic, Redding and South Norwalk, and features several high school students from Fairfield County as actors in the film. Brown alums are encouraged to bring their children as the materials presented in the film are designed to bring the past to life
in a way that is both captivating and informing for the target demographic: young people ages 11-14 in grades 6-9. This is the second film screening hosted by the Brown Club, building on the success of last year's screening of the movie "Buddy: The Rise and Fall of America's Most Notorious Mayor," which drew over 200 people. Meet other Brown alums for drinks at 6pm at the Brickhouse Pub (244 Bedford Street) next door to the Avon Theater (272 Bedford Street), and then watch the premiere of the film at 7pm. One of our most popular events will return! The Brown Club's Annual Family Lobster Bake will feature an evening of hors d'oeuvres, drinks and outdoor dining in a fabulous setting. ANNUAL FAMILY LOBSTER BAKE
One of our most popular events returned again with over 100 participants! The Brown Club's Annual Family Lobster Bake featured an evening of hors d'oeuvres, drinks and outdoor dining in a fabulous setting. HOT 'N COLE: A COLE PORTER CELEBRATION! AT THE WESTPORT COUNTRY PLAYHOUSE
FEATURING A PRIVATE MEETING FOR BROWN ALUMS WITH DIRECTOR JAMES NAUGHTON '67 AFTER THE SHOW! A special block of tickets for Brown Alums, with discounted pricing for Brown Club Members, was reserved for Hot ‘N Cole, a Cole Porter musical revue directed by James Naughton '67, celebrating the life of one of the great songwriting masters in American musical history at the Westport Country Playhouse. This lively song and dance revue was jam-packed with 48 of Porter’s more than 1,000 songs written during his lifetime—everything from You're the Top to It's De-Lovely to Another Openin', Another Show. ELIZABETH OBERBECK '82 (THE DRESSM AKER) AND WENDY WALKER '89 (FOUR WIVES)
An exciting discussion and book signing was held featuring Brown authors and fellow Fairfield County alums Elizabeth Birkelund-Oberbeck '82 and Wendy Walker '89. Elizabeth and Wendy shared the inspiration behind their books and read excerpts from The Dressmaker and newly-released Four Wives. A book signing was held at the end.
The Dressmaker: In this romantic debut novel, a reserved provincial French tailor falls hopelessly in love with a woman who’s hired him to create her wedding dress.

Four Wives: The picture-perfect lives of four wives and mothers begin to unravel against the backdrop of outrageous suburban wealth.

FACULTY LECTURE: MAKING A PLACE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY AT BROWN
Brown Professor Susan Alcock, Director of the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, Joukowsky Family Professor of Classics and Professor of Anthropology, spoke on recent activities and plans for Brown's Joukowsky Institute and on current archaeology projects involving Brown. Recently elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries London, Sue is a Yale and University of Cambridge trained classical archaeologist with interests in the material culture of the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia, particularly in Hellenistic and Roman times. Her most recent work, the Vorotan Project in southern Armenia, explores the topography of the Vorotan River watershed using innovative archaeological techniques including satellite analyses, excavation, regional survey, mortuary analyses and lithic studies. AN AFTERNOON WITH HISTORY PROFESSOR HOWARD CHUDACOFF

Brown alums from Fairfield County joined fellow Westchester County alumni, parents, friends at Rye Country Day School for an afternoon of discussion featuring Howard Chudacoff, Professor of History at Brown University.
Howard Chudacoff's research has focused on the history of childhood in the United States, with a recently completed a book on the history of children's play, colonial times to the present. This work examines shifting trends in children's play, paying particular attention to children's culture and the alternative/oppositional interactions between how children played and how adults thought and wanted children to play. The project utilized diaries and autobiographies as its major sources, supplemented by other materials, including social scientific surveys, market surveys, and secondary works. Professor Chudacoff spoke on this and related topics of interest.
