2004-2005 Regional Scholar

The BCC Regional Scholar for the 2004-2005 academic year is Beau Gaitors of Morgan Park High School.

Beau sends this message to the alumni who contributed to the scholarship: "My name is Beau Gaitors and I live on the south side of Chicago in Morgan Park. I live with my mom on the south side in Englewood. In my mother's household I have three brothers and one sister. In my father's household I have three brothers. As the first person in my family to attend college there are many high expectations of me and I will take them on with no fear because there are so many people like yourselves giving me the guidance and support necessary to succeed. I plan to major in Computer Science-Economics. Thank you for your generosity.  I will use it in the most productive manner in gaining my education and preparation for life here at Brown.

2003-2004 Regional Scholars

The BCC Regional Scholars for the 2003-2004 academic year are Micaela Dowdy of Providence St. Mel High School, and Grisel Murillo of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.Micaela sends this message to those who supported her and all Chicago area alumni: “My name is Micaela Dowdy and I live on the west side of Chicago in the Austin Community. I have two little sisters and a little brother. The generous gift that your organization has provided will aid me in attaining a Bachelor's degree in Childhood Psychology. At this point I plan to go home to pursue a Master's in this field at University of Illinois at Chicago. I would love to work in the hospital or the Chicago Public School system, where I can help the future of my community. This is my dream. You are helping to make that a reality. Thank you very much.

Grisel also wrote to us and says: "My name is Grisel Murillo and I currently reside in the culturally rich Latino neighborhood of Pilsen located in Chicago. I have lived in this crowded neighborhood most of my life.... I only know of two other people in my neighborhood who have ever been accepted into Ivy League Universities. At high schools around here it is a remarkable achievement to say you graduated from high school, and an even greater one to say you were accepted to any of the community colleges or universities here. It is for this reason that our having been accepted to distinguished universities such as Brown has begun to set new standards here... as an example for other students to set their sights higher than they ever thought possible....At Brown I plan on double concentrating in Sociology and Spanish. .... I plan on coming back to communities like the one I grew up in, and through research, help them rise up amidst the poverty and violence that clutters their streets.”
