Volunteer Tutoring

Last year, the Brown Club of Chicago adopted Columbia Explorers Academy (CEA), which is a Chicago public school in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest side of the city, through a program called Alumni for Public Schools (APS).  The program was a tremendous success with over 20 volunteers tutoring over 20 students.  Those who participated found the program to be highly rewarding.

We're kicking off our second year of the partnership with a new and improved tutoring program.  Brown alumni and friends will lead a series of Saturday writing workshops for 4th-6th graders at CEA.  Each workshop session will focus on a different topic of interest to students and tutors, such as movie reviews, cooking, or travel.  E-mail Sheri Frost Leo '01 (sherifrost@gmail.com) if you'd like to volunteer at any or all of the following Saturday sessions (10 am - 12 pm): Oct. 18, Nov. 1, Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Feb. 7, Mar. 7, Mar. 28, May 2.

Principal for a Day

Another great opportunity to get involved with Chicago Public Schools is Principal for a Day.  For more information, please visit http://www.pfad.cps.k12.il.us/ or contact Ellen Silverman '79 (ellensilverman@hotmail.com or 773-758-3950) to learn more about how you can join other Brown alumni around the city as principal for a day on Thursday, October 30, 2008.

High School Choice Awareness Program

Few CEA graduates know about high school options such as Chicago Public School selective admission, private or charter high schools.  We are planning a program to promote awareness of these alternatives for CEA students.  If you are interested in volunteering for our High School Choice Awareness Program, please contact Ellen Silverman '79 (EllenSilverman@hotmail.com or 773-758-3950).
