Columbia Explorers Academy Career Day, Friday, May 2nd
Chicago Public Schools Teacher For a Day, Tuesday, May 6th Alumni for Public Schools, "dating rubik's cube" Film Event, Friday, May 9th
For the past year, the Brown Club of Chicago (BCC) has expanded its efforts to help our community through participation in Alumni for Public Schools (APS), a program designed to facilitate partnerships between Chicago Public Schools and Chicago alumni chapters of colleges and universities. Last fall, the BCC partnered with Columbia Explorers Academy (CEA), an elementary school serving kindergarten through 8th grade. Its population, totaling 900, is 99% Hispanic, with most students coming from low-income families that have little to no formal education. Through our involvement with APS, we are pleased to offer you the programs listed below.
Columbia Explorers Academy Career Day, Friday, May 2nd
As part of the BCCs ongoing partnership with CEA, we are again participating in the schools Career Day, which will be held on Friday, May 2nd. For this event, volunteers will be asked to arrive at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast with the schools staff and then will be taken to two or more classrooms to engage in open discussions regarding their careers. The program will end at 11:45 a.m. at the latest. Those who participated last year found it to be a highly rewarding experience and were impressed with the students interests in the volunteers careers, which led to a longer than expected Q&As with the classes. This is a particularly good opportunity for our volunteers to emphasize the importance of education and its impact on their chosen professions. Unlike last year, we are being asked for more participants so that the school will have volunteers for grades 1 through 8.
Chicago Public Schools Teacher For a Day, Tuesday, May 6th

Teacher for a Day will provide an opportunity for business and community members to gain a better understanding of and a develop a deeper appreciation of the work Chicago Public School teachers provide each school day and throughout the school year. This years event will be held May 6, 2008. Your day begins at the school and classroom to which you are assigned and closes with an informal luncheon at your school with the teachers and other faculty members.
