Please join the Brown Club of Chicago for a movie event on Saturday, June 28th at 2:00 pm! We will be hosting a private showing of the award-winning documentary Buddy: The Rise and Fall of Americas Most Notorious Mayor. Produced, written, and directed by Cherry Arnold and narrated by James Woods, the film follows the political career of Vincent A. Buddy Cianci, former mayor of Providence . Buddy recently won the New England Regional Emmy for outstanding documentary and has also been honored at film festivals all over the country.
The press information provides this description of the film: As the longest-serving mayor in modern day history, Buddy Cianci remains one of the country's most controversial political figures. Cianci's unflagging popularity and extraordinary career comebacks have baffled political analysts and frustrated federal investigators. Brilliant and aggressive, charming and ruthless, Cianci is described by supporters and critics alike as a political survivor. Buddy, the documentary, paints a complex portrait of the often contradictory and always audacious public figure who became the youngest man and the first Italian-American to become mayor of Providence , and a Republican who unseated a Democrat stronghold of more than thirty years. From his early promise as an attorney prosecuting organized crime to his success overseeing Providence 's "renaissance," the film tracks Cianci's entanglements with city council opposition, union skirmishes, personal scandals, and criminal indictments. The result is a fascinating study of American local politics and a surprising tale of a man who, in the words of one commentator, "has a city as his mistress."
We will be screening the film in a private room at Glascotts Saloon, a bar located at 2158 N. Halsted Street in Lincoln Park (corner of Halsted and Webster). The event starts at 2:00 and the movie will start promptly at 2:30 pm. The film is about 1½ hours long.
Glascotts has a full range of drinks available for purchase and attendees can also order food from the Greek restaurant next door on a pay-as-you-go basis. There is no charge for this event, however, we will be taking donations to be provided to the producer of the film to support unfunded production costs. Alumni and their guests are welcome.

Description of the Play
Passion Play: a cycle
By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Mark Wing-Davey
An alternately hilarious and unsettling look at the thorny relationship between politics and religion, Ruhl uses the traditional dramatic restaging of the final days of Christ as a basis for the exploration of three fascinating historical periods: Elizabethan England, pre-World War II Germany, and Reagan-era America. Startlingly original, epic in scope yet beautifully human in its effect, Passion Play pits religious dogma, personal faith, and the realities of politics against love, beauty, and truthall with Ruhls signature wit, seductive theatricality, and devastating insight.

Thursday, March 29 Family Reading Night at CEA
A Public Service Opportunity
The Brown Club of Chicago is beginning an effort to volunteer in the Chicago Public Schools Adopt-A-School Program. As the Brown Club continues to grow, we want to expand our efforts to help our community and we believe this is an excellent opportunity. Many local alumni groups (such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Williams College to name a few) have been volunteering in their individual adopted school for many years and regard it as personally rewarding as well as helpful to the schools. Initially, weve targeted a single night, Thursday, March 29, for helping with a reading night at a school. Please read on for details
Our club identified the Columbia Explorers Academy (CEA) as a candidate for adoption. The school is housed in an attractive building newly constructed in 2003. Grades served there are kindergarten through 8. The student population totaling 1,200 is 98% Mexican, low-income and from families with little to no formal education. Approximately 40% of the classes are conducted in Spanish.
Brown grads Ellen Silverman 79 and Phil Chesler 98 are spearheading this exciting public service initiative. Ellen was recently Principal For A Day at CEA and she found the Principal and staff to be helpful and committed. She found the students to be adorable and bright-eyed!
The Brown Club of Chicago is seeking volunteers for a Thursday, March 29 Family Reading Night at CEA. From 6-8 pm parents and students attend book readings, and get prizes and free books. CEA can use volunteers for anything from reading to the kids, directing the people flow through the halls, handing out the books, and mingling with the students and staff. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus but absolutely not necessary.
CEA is located at 4520 South Kedzie in Chicago's Brighton Park community. Our volunteers can use the school parking lot which is right across the street from the school. There is also public transportation nearby. Click on the link here for future CEA information, a picture of the schoool and directions.
http://www.columbiaea.cps.k12.il.us/
Contact Ellen @ (773-758-3950 or ellen@chicagocommunities.com) or Phil @ (312-848-8808 or chessss@hotmail.com) for more information. Please RSVP to either of them as soon as possible or by March 20 at the latest. They may be able to arrange car-pooling too.

Go west approximately one mile to Ryan Field. If you take the expressway, stay on the Kennedy until I-90 and 94 split. Take I-94 West (Edens) toward Milwaukee. Exit on Old Orchard Road and proceed east. Turn left on Gross Point Road and then turn right at the next light which is Central Street. Proceed approximately two miles to
Ryan Field.

Public Transit:
CTA, Metra, and Pace all provide service to Ryan Field and Welsh-Ryan Arena!
Sometimes the easiest way to get to Northwestern football and basketball games is by taking the train -- or even the bus! We list here your various options if you would rather not take your car and fight the traffic and parking hassles.
The "El": Take the CTA Red Line train north to Howard, where you connect to the Purple Line; take the Purple Line to the Central stop (please note that during rush hour, the Purple Line runs express from downtown Chicago). Once you get off the train at Central, you can either walk three blocks west to Ryan Field -- past the fire station, away from the hospitals -- or connect to the westbound #201 CTA bus that stops a block from the stadium (Welsh-Ryan Arena is directly north of Ryan Field).
Metra: The Metra Union Pacific North Line from downtown Chicago and Kenosha, Wis. stops at Central Street, where you may walk three blocks east on Central to Ryan Field or connect to the eastbound #201 CTA bus that stops a block from the stadium (Welsh-Ryan Arena is directly north of Ryan Field). If you cross Green Bay Road, you are walking in the wrong direction.
Pace (bus): Pace route #213 runs along Green Bay Road and connects with five other Pace routes, and also stops at Central Street.
Click on the RTA website here for times, directions and connections to all Northwestern home games, or call 836-7000 (city or suburbs)!
To Prairie Moon:
Prairie Moon is located at 1502 Sherman Avenue in Evanston, approximately one mile south of Central Street. It is one block south of Davis Street and one block west of Chicago Avenue. For more information, call Prairie Moon at 847-864-8328.
