February 2007
Dear Friends and Classmates:
Happy New Year! As 2006 turns into 2007, we know that everyone from the Class of 1999 finds themselves a bit older, a bit wiser, and—if there’s any justice in the world—a little bit less in debt… This is a milestone year of sorts for most of us. Yes, 2007 means the “Big 3-0” as many of us have recently turned—or soon will turn—30-years-old. Although we may still feel like tossing the Frisbee around the Main Green or singing “Green Alligator” with Dave Binder over Spring Weekend, our lives have changed much since May 1999 and we have all taken on new challenges and responsibilities. We find ourselves no longer defined by our potential but more and more by what we are doing and how we are shaping our place in the world.
In the years since graduation, we have become parents, teachers, bankers, Peace Corps volunteers, doctors, diplomats, lawyers, sculptors, policy analysts, writers, journalists, and actors. To list our classmates' accomplishments would take pages, but you can get a real sense of what we're up to by visiting our class website at http://alumni.brown.edu/classes/1999/. Website quiz: Which classmate was the only Brown alum to play and win a Super Bowl championship last January (and he was Captain!)? Visit our site to find out! If you have information you'd like to share, please send it to us so that we can add it!
As we turn 30, it is only natural to take a moment to reflect on where we have been and what has helped us get to where we are. While our experiences are varied, there is one thing that ties us all together: Brown University. If you look back upon Brown like we do, then you too share the passion to see that Bruno remains a strong example of enlightened thought, rigorous debate, and civic duty. In May 2009—just twenty-six short months from now—we will be invited to return to campus to celebrate another milestone, our 10-year reunion. (And you thought you felt old at 30…) For some, this will be the first time back since walking through the Van Wickle Gates; for others, it will be just another day on campus. But we hope for all of us, it will be an opportunity to reconnect with friends and family and to help contribute to the Brown community. We hope you will begin planning now to attend—but you don’t have to wait ‘til 2009 to reconnect.
We all have powerful connections to Brown—and to each other. As our Reunion approaches please contact us and let us know where you are and what you are doing. Soon you will receive a Class of 1999 Newsletter, in which you will read about some of our classmates’ stories. We want to hear from you firsthand so we can begin to rekindle the Brown flame before the Reunion is upon us. Spread the word: encourage friends to update their contact information on the alumni website (http://alumni.brown.edu/). Additionally, we have a number of opportunities available to help the class prepare for the big weekend:
- Help Andrew maintain the website!
- Help Tina plan upcoming events!
- Help Xochitl and Cathryn write the newsletter!
Do visit our class website at http://alumni.brown.edu/classes/1999/ and send us updates on the latest news in your life. We hope to hear from each of you very soon.
Ever True,
