A Lifelong Connection

About the Brown Alumni Association

Pictured above are 2009–2011 BAA officers (L-R) Nancy Kail ’84, treasurer; Joe Fernandez ’85, president; George Billings ’72, president-elect; Gail Solomon ’76, secretary.

All Brown alumni are automatically lifelong members of the Brown Alumni Association (BAA), which seeks to unite alumni efforts in support of Brown by nurturing each alumna and alumnus’s relationships with the University and with other alumni. Most of the programs and services described on this website receive funding from and/or were created by the BAA.

A Letter from the BAA President:

January 2010

Dear Fellow Brown Alumni,

I write to you today, six months into my BAA presidency, honored to have been elected to the position and enthusiastic about the work ahead of us. I am tremendously pleased with the group of alumni that were elected to serve as my fellow BAA officers. George Billings ’72, Nancy Kail ’84, and Gail Solomon ’76 – the new officers of the BAA – were elected by a vote of Brown’s entire alumni body and were selected from a field of nominees representing a wide variety of hard-working alumni leaders.

We have gotten off to a fast start working to ensure that Brown alumni are actively engaged with the life of our University. We are working together, building on the efforts of previous BAA leaders, while setting an ambitious set of priorities for 2009 through 2011, including:

  • Effectively driving young alumni engagement
  • Recruiting emerging alumni leaders to the BAA Board
  • Enhancing the BAA’s alumni career programs and services
  • Transforming Maddock Alumni Center into a dynamic magnet for student and alumni engagement
  • Continuing to improve web-based communications tools used to support alumni engagement

Building on the momentum created by immediate past BAA President Spencer Crew ’71, I have already been working to recruit more young alumni and women to the BAA Board of Governors. Every generation of Brown men and women contribute to the BAA’s efforts to engage Brown alumni in the life of the University and I believe that we have a responsibility to expand young alumni representation on the BAA’s board. If the BAA is to fulfill its goal of helping alumni maintain a lifelong connection to Brown, we need to focus on our youngest alumni to ensure that they remain engaged with Brown throughout their lives. Ensuring that young alumni are well-represented on the BAA board will ultimately help the Board do a better job of focusing on young alumni engagement.

I look forward to working with the outstanding alumni leaders of the BAA and the staff of Alumni Relations to help increase alumni engagement with Brown in the next two years. As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions. Please feel free to be in touch with me or the BAA Office.

With best wishes,

Joseph M. Fernandez ’85
President, Brown Alumni Association
